While both the J-10 and the JF-17 are lightweight fighters, the latter could be categorised as a 'very light' fighter comparable to the American F-20 or Swedish Gripen while the former is comparable in weight to the American F-16 or Japanese F-2. The J-10, like the F-16, uses a single engine from a heavyweight twin engine fighter class - in the F-16's case the F110 engine from the F-15 and in the J-10's case the WS-10 from the J-11 and J-16 fighters. The ‘very light’ fighters by contrast borrow engines from twin engine medium weight rather than heavyweight fighters - the JF-17 using a heavily enhanced version of the Russian MiG-29's RD-33 engine while the Gripen uses the F104 engine of the MiG's American competitor the F-18. Thus while the J-10C is comparable in performance to the American F-21 - a heavily enhanced F-16 variant - the JF-17 Block 3 is comparable to the Swedish-American Gripen E with both developed under similar design philosophies and prioritising similar capabilities.

South Africa’s polar research and logistics vessel, S.A. Agulhas II, has helped enable an expedition team to find the wreckage of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance… which was crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea, off the coast of Antarctica, back in 1915. For over a century, the Endurance has been one of the most famous undiscovered shipwrecks in the world, lost almost 10,000 feet below sea level, in some of the iciest waters on the planet.

Reading reports of people stockpiling flour and sunflower oil in the Maghreb, a region which depends heavily on imports of these products from Ukraine and Russia.
With the spike in prices on the agricultural futures markets, exporting producers in SA are smiling, but it's an alarming prospect for food insecure countries, regardless of source country.

News reports coming out regarding USA funding biological labs in Ukraine is upto 200 million dollars

But this I know that USA doesn't allow biological research of dangerous bio agents in own soil due to inherent risks , culpability in case of breakout and post cold war domestic laws forbidding dangerous bio research in US, So to circumvent it , they fund institutions , govt or private in other countries either overtly or covertly

They tried it in ind.. , last year gov almost cancelled the licence of a private institute which had recieved funding from USA for carrying out research on a dangerous bio agent with USA even knowing that the institute didn't have the necessary bio safety level facilities for containing such dangerous bio agents . Moreover the funding was hidden under the name of a different project.

To understand the gravity of such wrong & forbidden research by USA and west in other countries, know that 1 kg pf a highly refined bio agent is enough to kill all humans on the planet , if so engineered .
After all this time people still chose to believe in familiar narratives! It's like accepting the official version of 911. Some people will NEVER wake up.

General Irabor: In Fighting Insurgency, Sometimes You Lose a War to Win It

March 14, 2022 3:47

Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s determination to end terrorism in collaboration with national security and defence stakeholders. In this interview with selected Editors, Irabor discusses the evolution of terrorism worldwide, noting that extremism is not unique to Nigeria. The defence chief also explained the armed forces are doing differently to fight insurgency to the finish. According to him, the armed forces are more prepared for all scenarios. Excerpts:

How have the strategies used to fight terrorism in Nigeria evolved?

Some of our tactics have changed, but our vision remains the same – We want to bring an end to the beginning of all terrorism. We are achieving these in collaboration with stakeholders in national security and defence. Globally, terrorism has evolved in the last two decades. The case is not different in Nigeria. What we are doing differently is to be ahead of this evolving trend. The Armed Forces of Nigeria is more prepared for all scenarios.

Unfortunately, it will do us more harm than good if we go public to reveal all we have done or what we have stopped doing or will do. The good news is that in all scenarios, Nigeria will win. Let us never forget the words of Winston Churchill, ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.’

Since the war against Boko Haram/ISWAP started, the military has lost some major battles in the North East. What is being done to avoid future defeats?

A better way to look at it is that in the last 20 years, the military has won major battles in the North-East. We have won most of our battles, and that is why we are winning the war. This is not just an opinion. It is the fact. The most recent evidence from the Global Terrorism Report confirms this. A war is made up of several battles. In a perfect world, you plan to win everything, but perfection never happens in war. Sometimes the way forward is backwards. Sometimes you lose a battle to win the war.

There has been a recent wave of military takeovers in Africa? Is the military approach a remedy to poor governance?

First, let me make it clear that the probability of non-democratic leadership in Nigeria is zero. Rather than go back to our past, we have learnt from it. It is no longer an option. We are passing this message down the ladder. Like Nigeria, other African countries must strengthen their democratic processes rather than subvert them. Our findings reveal that one main reason for these negative events is when a leader overstays and loses focus. This causes government institutions to weaken, and eventually, the non-democratic take over.

Some security stakeholders believe that the final stage of the war against terrorism will be faster if the country hires foreign fighters (mercenaries).

Where lies the loyalty of the foreign fighter? To Nigeria or self? The men and women of the Armed Forces fight to protect Nigeria, not because they are paid to do it. It is because they, we see it as a duty. Certainly, we will continue to collaborate with other global powers and defence institutions, but we are not going to outsource our primary responsibility.

What is the military leadership doing concerning complaints from some officers about injustice and unfair disciplinary procedures?

There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation about the administrative codes and procedures of the Armed Forces. Like our global partners, the military does not operate with court orders. A court-martial is different from a civil court. The military has means to maintain discipline and order.

How much support is the military getting from non-governmental organisations, especially on the non-kinetic approach to rebuilding peace?

Just as nobody can use only one finger to write, the Armed Forces of Nigeria cannot right all the wrongs in security by itself. There is a lot of work that some of these organisations have put in, especially to protect women and children in the North East. A lot more still needs to be done on the non-kinetic approach to achieving peace.

Tomorrow, Wednesday 16 March, is going to be very interesting for all those countries generally grouped with Russia amongst "emerging economies".
Moscow needs to hand over $117 million in interest payments on dollar-denominated government bonds, and with roughly $315 billion of Russia's foreign reserves frozen by sanctions, they've indicated an intention to pay in roubles.

Deja vu for me as I started my career with the Russian default of 1998. Interest rates shot up all around the world, and South Africa, with its tradable currency and comparatively open economy, got unfairly thumped. Even the dollar slumped 10% against the yen in two days, the most it has ever fallen against any currency in modern history.
For SA, the effect was enormous. The local prime rate shot up like a rocket, up all the way to a record 25.5%, and the 10-year bond yield hit 20%.

If Russia defaults tomorrow, the effects won't be as severe as 1998, for a few reasons:
1) Russian sovereign debt to foreigners is only $60 billion, an accounting error;
2) The ZAR has remained comparatively stable over the past few months. No longer is the rand a proxy for emerging market currencies, as other currencies, like the Turkish lira, are now as highly traded as the rand was back then; and
3) Unlike 1998, SA’s inflation rate is now lower than the world average, which makes for a stronger currency, less inflationary effects and reduced pressure on the SA Reserve Bank to continue raising interest rates, which should bode well for the economy.

Getting pounded by artillery and cruise missiles isn’t fun. They are starting to realize that they are the “Iraqi’s” in this war. Minimal air support and left at the mercy of the vks.

I feel Nigerians will have a lot to learn from all these, maybe my view is myopic; but from Putin and zelensky speeches today, a lot is going on. Putin from his speech doesn't look affected or troubled; my condolences to the Ukrainians and russians lives sacrificed in such a pathetic manner. Zelensky using emotional charge to try cajole politicians, is basically useless; just like a cub telling
his father this is how to roar.

I always knew you knew your ishyt! Have you ever heard of the story of looted SARB gold reserves?

Insiders Looted Gold Worth $200b from South African Reserve Bank

November 25, 2014
[url][http://henrymakow.com/2014/11/insider-exposes-south-african-central-bank.html#sthash.55C5skc6.dpufurl]

300 tonnes of gold valued at over R300 billion was stolen from the SARB, with the help of insiders as part of a bigger looting exercise valued at a massive R2.25 trillion.

A third of our foreign currency reserves are looked after by a single bank: JP Morgan, a bank who's reputation and skulduggery goes sickeningly deep.
And then 2 yrs later a strange story I'm convinced is somehow connected.

HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Zimbabwean aviation authorities impounded a U.S.-registered cargo jet, a senior official said Monday, after a dead body later believed to be a stowaway and millions of South African rand were found on board.

The Herald, a state-run newspaper, reported that the MD-11 trijet was traveling from Germany to South Africa "with millions of rands." At today's exchange rate, 1 million rand is worth $62,500.

Authorities here learned the money belonged to the South Africa Reserve Bank. Police planned to issue a statement later Monday.
[url]https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-cargo-plane-zimbabwe-body-stowaway-cash-wheel-well//url]

Prior to all this in the early 90s at the end of Apartheid there was a successful scheme to loot billions, IIRC around 100 bn $ from government coffers.
I can't find a link but I first read it in 2005 thereabouts. Anyway, this is what should be investigated NOT Zuma and so called State capture - I know the Guptas' confiscated property was quietly returned.

Rand is bolstered by the commodity prices and I see it strengthening in the short to mid term to even as low as R13 to the $....was actually in a Seed investment seminar this morning that stated the rand could theoretically trade at as low as R8 to the dollar at current commodity prices... But we all know there isn't enough demand for that to happen.

In the short term we will see inflation rise about 0.6-0.8pp.... Over all I'm quite optimistic that the Russia/Ukraine conflict has in fact opened more opportunities than Risks for SA.... What we don't want is an escalation of the war because then we are all fvcked but if its going to stay like it is now for a while that could mean a boost for the SAn economy
