abbey621: Lol, very funny. Hope you are aware that raising interest rate pushes up price of money, this affects rates on everything from credit cards to corporate bonds - when this happens what will investors and business do? The only advantage is that it takes capital from everyone else (Nigeria, China, etc etc all external investors) and send them into the US. So I really don’t know why you said it’s good news. (It’s never a good news raising IR). Everyone will start dumping the US binds and moving to TB etc etc, as money market becomes expensive. Well I guess you know more than me. There you have it. 1 Like |

4Play: There are too many dumb people on Nairaland. You are just wasting your time on them. See them linking inflation that has been complained about since last year to Ukraine war. The internet just gives voice to a lot of dickheads. The major cause for inflation is all the free money America was printing during the pandemic. Everybody was just spending the free money without thinking it will come back to bite them. Same is happening in Europe but to a far lesser extent. 2 Likes |

Well this has been anticipated, not sure why the new uses words like "surprise move"... 1. the Fed had long ago signaled interest rates will rise as the economy recovers from covid 2. there was speculation that the Fed would delay the rate rise in view of the Ukraine crisis 3. rates went up anyway, since inflation is becoming a thing, and the economic impact of the war is still uncertain |

frowland: That's not necessarily true, if the cost to borrow money is very low then you'll have too much money in circulation hence high inflation, if everyone can afford 20k designer bags what do you think happens to the value of money? You also have to look at context here, interest rates was 0% to 0.25% for a long time, that is basically free money, no country survives by having such a low interest rate when the economic activities does not support it. The main benefit of reducing interest rate is to encourage spending and greater economic activities, when those factors are no longer needed to be stimulated(Economy is doing well) then a low interest rate means less money earned for servicing debts, less value of investments and overall an over stimulated economy which leads to hyper inflation. To put things in context, what do you think the interest rate in Nigeria is? Once you find out you'll see that even if the U.S increases interest rate to 2%, they'll still be in good shape. 2 Likes |

abbey621: Of course, excess money in circulation in turn causes inflation - That’s Economics 101. But I am yet to see where it’s good news especially to the citizens. Because they will borrow less and spend less. So how is that a good news to them? Isn’t it relative? 2 Likes |

frowland: Context bro, context! If too much money is already in circulation, why would they spend less? Stimulus checks, loan forgiveness, child tax credits etc, there's so much money in circulation that demand for products and services are very very high leading to higher cost of goods and services. The businesses continue to raise price because demand keeps increasing at an higher pace than production. For example, I bought a $400,000 house in December 2021, it is March 2022 now and that same property is being valued at $490,000, I did a test run and I recieved 3 offers well above the asking price of $490,000. This my friend is what the feds are trying to combat, without putting a barrier to borrowing, prices will continue to skyrocket not only in real estate but in every commodity/service. 2 Likes 1 Share |

After all, U.S has more than $26.trillion debt and the Chinese do own a lot of U.S. debt—about $1.1 trillion as of early 2020. Japan and China own about 5.2% and 4.6% of the U.S. debt, respectively. Japanese-owned debt doesn't receive nearly as much negative attention as Chinese-owned debt, ostensibly because Japan is seen as a friendlier nation and the Japanese economy hasn't been growing at a 7% clip year after year. The other countries that hold the most U.S. debt include the U.K., Brazil, and Ireland. So, forget all that debt issues and invest, when it's time to enjoy the debt, enjoy it. Let me help u with the site that can help u see more of U.S heavy debt profile: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/080615/china-owns-us-debt-how-much.asp 1 Like |

For us to understand why the war prolonged and didn't end in the first 74 hours proposed by the western intelligence, we need to look at these few points; 1) Putin declare a "special military operation " and NOT WAR in Ukraine.. there Russian parliament passes a resolution for international special mission and not a war act, therefore the scope of operations and engagement is limited (believe me Russia has not even broke their military Depot). 2) the western countries were expecting Russia to flattened Ukraine with state of the art explosion and maybe tactical small nuclear weapons... But Russia so far has been strategic in their target, targeting military installations and residential buildings used by Ukrainian army as cover up. 3) Ukrainian army are resolute in their resistance, they also share the same military training as Russians as they were former part of Soviet Union military set, so they understand Russia military drills and the west are also feeding them with valuable Intel's. 4) the weapons used by Ukrainian to resist Russia are sourced from all over the world, therefore giving them undue advantage weapon wise. 5) Russia and Ukraine are the same blood brothers, there are some brutal things that Russia would have done, but they can't do it because they share the same blood ancestry with Ukraine... I will call this fight a brotherly fight. Honestly Russia is using less military engagement in Ukraine, and trying to see weather zelenskyy will get sense and agree to their demand, there is nothing stopping Russia from bombarding and flattening Ukraine, but they out of love don't want to do it. Finally, Russia is using this war to negotiate and not necessarily to destroy Ukraine as the western media portrayed........ No body understand the mind of Putin because he doesn't talk much, Putin is a great listener, that is why he understands the minds of Western leaders because they all talk too much, he understands the importance of timing, the role of war and peace..... This war is not by accident, Putin has planned it for a very long time with plan A, B, C, D etc, he has possibly plan for a nuclear escalation incase NATO want to act foolish. 2 Likes |

abbey621:. How then is what you described above good news to the seller? Once you raise interest rate, borrowers suffer, businesses suffer (Like trying to sell the house). So I really don’t know why you said it’s good news. The fact is, there is inflation and one of the ways to combat it is to raise IR. This doesn’t mean it’s a good news. Good move yes, but ‘bad’ news to the citizens as the economy will temporarily slow down as spending drops. Case study; Nigeria’s interest rate have been high and while this is good to attract investors, the masses are ‘suffering’ in quote. While raising interest rate is to combat inflation, the downside is that the citizens spend less and are less happy. |

frowland: Guy you no dey listen! How can borrowers suffer over insignificant increases, do you expect to keep borrowing money for free forever? Read the ending of my last comment, even if the US government raises interest rate to 2% the U.S economy is well poised for it, YOU ONLY REDUCE INTEREST RATES WHEN THE ECONOMY SUPPORTS IT. For historical context in the 2000s interest rates averaged 4-5%, in the 1980s when prices went through the roof interst rate was over 14% and you think a 0.5% interest rate is bad for borrowers......STOP IT! Now to my main point, I said good news for investors in the USA! I don't know what investments you have but if they told you to choose between high inflation and increased cost of borrowing, if your answer is high inflation then you might as well gather your money and set it on fire. My example of the real estate is very clear, even if I sold my hosue for 550k or 600k dollars, do you think I can buy my dream house or a replacement for normal price? Nope, everything increased, so even tho I made profit from the sale, it is basically not worth much due to inflation. In simpel terms, INFLATION = YOUR MONEY BEING WORTH LESS! 1 Like |

abbey621: You are making simple question appear as if it’s complicated by throwing around figures that is not relevant in this discuss. I had already stated earlier that it’ favors investors but not everyone is an investor, and while the news favors in most cases this investors, it is also not good news for borrowers and businesses. The goal of IR hike no matter how small is to combat inflation on a macroeconomic scale by slowing down the economy until supply begins to gain traction than demand- This is good from economic and regulatory point of view but from the citizens view, it means their holiday is over; Reason I asked ‘how is this good news?’. Well it’s all about where you are standing. It’s all good! Whatever your opinion is, you are right. Changes nothing. |
