My thoughts so far from the war in Ukraine from an African perspective.

- UCAV and Autonomous Air Systems are the future of warfare. As we can see, but Ukraine and Russia have used UCAVs to devastating effects.

- African countries need to invest in man portable ATGMs, and far more emphasis should be put in training small squads instead of large brigade level exercises.

- APCs are overated, apart from small arms fire, they provide as much protection level as a Toyota Hilux.

- Tracked Vehicles are more important than wheeled vehicles.

- African countries need to invest in Standoff munitions.

While the Ukrainians are defending themselves admirably, they are no match for the Russian military.

While the Russian military has paid on heavy price on the loss of equipment, they have continued to make significant advances on multiple fronts, more especially in the south of Ukraine.

I wonder why they do not advance more often into enemy territory off road to gain more element of surprise.

I also notice they have reduced the use of Frontline aviation, instead favouring rocket assisted artillery strikes and cruise missiles.

Early on, the Ukrainians had highly mobile blood riders armed with atgms and rpgs, roaming the backroads hunting Russian rear column especially. So whatever was not blown to pieces got stuck in the mud.

Two more observation I've made.

The so called Special Forces Vehicles, Russia has quite a number of them, seem to all be missing in action.

At the beginning of this war, many commentators, especially American, British and Western ones compared this conflict to America's war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I keep wondering, I didn't see Iraq or the Taliban fielding NLAWs and Javelins, so what basis are the conflicts similar?

I read that Russia organized their Army into 600-800 man “Battalion Tactical Groups” BTG of which only 200 are infantry, 200 are tankers and the rest AA/support/artillery. The low number of infantry per group has a real disadvantages in some situations.

In my opinion the commanders are not adapting to the situation fast enough. One example: Instead of dismounted infantry scouting ahead of the group they do armored recon with 1-2 MBTs that again become easy prey for ATGM squads. This might be Commanders incompetence or the RU army does not give them freedom to break the doctrine rules.

Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria took part in the UAE SWAT challenge in Dubai, which was held from 13 -17 March 2022.

They formed part of the 33 teams from 25 countries that participated within 5 challenge categories that tested each team's global and tactical, weaponry ability and proficiency.

Nigerian forces kill ISWAP leader, Sani Shuwaram Published on March 20, 2022

Islamic State’s West African Province (ISWAP) leader Sani Shuwaram, is dead, according to PRNigeria.

In November 2021, the ISWAP Shura (Judicial) Council installed the 45-year-old as the new Wali (Head) in Lake Chad.

Shuwaram and other terrorists were eliminated after aerial bombardments carried out in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.

Super Tucano jets flown by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) rained missiles on a number of identified ISWAP hideouts.

Shuwaram reportedly died from gunshot wounds sustained in the strikes that hit the sect’s camps at the Sabon Tumbun area of Lake Chad.

“Shuwaram was among terrorists injured by NAF air interdiction missions conducted at Sabon Tumbun near Kirta Wulgo.

“Subsequent strikes to his death alongside other ISWAP fighters receiving treatment including Abu Ibrahim”, a military officer confirmed.

NAF Director of Public Relations, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet said air and ground troops have continued military offensive around Kirta Wulgo.

“We don’t want to be dragged into making any statement or confirmation based on rumours or hearsay.

“Nevertheless, troops at the frontline alongside other agencies have sustained strikes against terrorist leaders and their enclaves until we get this job done”, the spokesman added.
