Nigeria has been represented at different international football competitions by great talents. We saw wonderful performances from these talents some times and at some other times, the football fans are disappointed. Some of the ex_internationals that have done Nigeria proud included; Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, Joseph Yobo, Kingsley Obiekwu, Obafemi Martins, Sunday Oliseh, Stephen Keshi. Others include; Taribo West, Daniel Amokachi, Samuel Okwaraji, Vincent Enyama and others too numerous to mention.

During their playing time for Nigeria, a very good number of them were still signed to either the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, French League 1 or the Spanish Laliga. As a result of this, they are paid by their club sides and match bonuses and allowances whenever they represent their country side in competitions such as international friendlies, African Cup of Nations and World Cup tournaments.

After retirement, some of them delved into coaching career while others choose different businesses to invest their hard earned money. It came to many Nigerians as a surprise when after a couple of years after retirement, some of these ex_Internationals start living from hand to mouth.

A very good example on the side of those living from hand to mouth after retirement was the case of a former Nigerian defender, Kingsley Obiekwu, who made headlines some weeks back after news broke that he had become a taxi driver. Obiekwu was part of the U-23 side that won Africa’s first football gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Social media was on meltdown as the news made it to the internet. Many lamented the current state of the former defender while others troll him for not investing his money. Others blamed the Nigeria government for not showing enough concern for the ex_internationals.

However, we must tell ourselves the truth. You represented Nigeria doesn't mean Nigeria should shoulder your responsibilities after retirement. Also,we must not forget that the said defender played along side people like Jay Jay and Kanu who are billionaires today. This call for questions such as; why was his case different and were the likes of Okocha and Kanu given preferential treatment after retirement?

The money as it is coming today won't continue forever.Consequently, footballers should learn to invest for the raining days to avoid stories such as that of Kingsley Obiekwu.
