The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has decried the spate of human trafficking in Anambra, stating that it recorded more than 40 cases in one year.

Judith-Chukwu Ibadin, the commander of NAPTIP in the state, said that most of the agency’s cases included child sexual exploitation and the sale of human beings.

“We have recorded and handled over 40 heart-touching cases of human trafficking in Anambra in the last year, and it bothers more on women and children.

“Children are being sold like commodities in the state which is why we hear cases of missing children. This is so disturbing,” she said.

She spoke at the opening of a three-day stakeholders’ sensitisation forum organised by Action Against Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants (A-TIPSOM- Nigeria) on Wednesday in Awka.

The project was supported by the Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL), Anambra Chapter and was funded by the European Union, the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIIAPP).

Mrs Ibadin further sought the support of the state government and relevant stakeholders to eradicate the menace.

Also speaking, Lilian Ezenwa, National Vice President, NACTAL, described the trafficking of persons and smuggling of migrants as a crime against humanity and should be eradicated in the country.

“Cases of baby sales and baby factories are becoming rampant in the south-East. So, the government needs to partner with stakeholders to curb these problems,” she said.

Part of the problem is from the government. Process of adoption should be very simple not filled with bribe-seeking crooks looking to extort parents for years before the completion of the process.

Now parents resort to buying babies for more than one million naira, something that is legal and should not even cost money like in places like the USA. Eg. If you don't want to take care of your child in the USA or you're not doing a good job, the government will instantly take the child from you and adopt him/her to new foster parents in 24 hours. No money collected! Nigeria is the main problem!

I totally condemn this act but at least the children are left in tact unlike some sophisticated region where someone who goes missing is already dismembered in 30 mins with his skull and vital organs being retailed in the human rituals market for less than $20.

The problem is that they are spreading the menace to other parts of the country.. now most of those brothels they open in South West are filled with their baby factory girls who do ashaw0 work on the side, get pregnant and produce babies for sale intermittently.
Same way Okija skull mining site came to us as a shock several years back, now see the menace all over SW, Rivers and likes.

Government should do and pass a law to be killing these traffickers once caught.. no human being deserves to be trafficked or subjected to slavery against their wish on whatever grounds.

Oooh! So Nigeria is the problem in this matter, but if such news is coming from another part of the country, Nigeria is no longer the problem. How you people pick and choose what the problem is for yourselves and everybody else is why no one rates you. Indeed, Stupidity doesn't die a natural death.

That is who they are. Crime is no crime if they are the one doing it. So hopeless.

The problem with most of you guys in the East is that you hardly concour to a crime committed by your fellow easterner.

You always look for ways to justify the crime by either blaming the government or other regions for it.

I pray one day your child should be taking and sold and let's see how you cope with the trauma.

Just image you dey blame process of adoption, who told you child buyers needed the children to bear thier surname?

Most of them go for either ritual or house boys which they labour day in day out at the end of it they get burn with a hot iron, or boiled oil or water being pored on them.

Fulani of the South, the reason they get away with many things here is South West is because Liberal Yoruba always say Igbo are sensitive and they are still recuperating from civil war

Civil war will not tell one to commit crime that scare even the devil now
