While I understand your drift vis-a-vis the concept of sovereignty and the right of choice of nations as it relates to political/economic alignment in saner climes, the concept of realpolitiks sadly portends that some nations will forever be cursed for sharing natural borders with a particular nation with completely different ideology.
USA is a free nation practicing democracy hence the rule of law prevails and as such USA is the police of the world...but that cannot be said of communist Russia who practice rogue and tyrannical dictatorship who suppress dissent and rule of law hence most sane countries don't want to form alliance or associate with them except for some hypocritical nations..

I bet you if you were given free visas to Russia and USA you would chose USA because you will be very free unlike Russia that is a security risk
