You all are sounding like ...you are pinging terabytes of highly influential data....what data does home automation contain...info about lightning or music etc...simple firewall solves whatever security needs for a home use...

What does an intruder want...is this a bank??

What data does home automation contain? Is the home a bank?

The above statement is made from a position of carelessness o. Take your personal data seriously.

Home network include highly valuable data to the bad guys e.g internet banking (password) data, email account data, title deeds, family data ( date of births, NIN number, BVN, Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram etc). Is home network a bank? Of course it is.

Home network is not just music and automated light switch. Please take your personal data/information seriously.

Firewall is not enough. Add a good VPN to the mix.

+ VPN = unstable wireless network.

Always consider the distance of your network to a VPN server?

Na naija we dey o. Always add that to the mix.

_________

There’s nothing as secure as cable network that were laid intentionally. The intruder will need to gain access into the building where your infrastructure is located before he can know the right cable to cut.

Well done!

If funding is not an issue, POP is the best in large hall with high ceiling.

A lot of halls now favour Suspended Ceiling Systems in difficult listening environments for pricing and good sound absorption. It’s a cheaper alternative to high end acoustic ceilings.

Here’s 800m2 suspended ceiling installed at Iperu.

Don't leave it to the vendor or installer to keep your network secure.

Change all default passwords as soon as they are gone.

I can go on and on.... But that's a good start.

If one can access your home automation network, he will try to get into your computers, etc.

Like I said in my first post, it depends on the person and the assets to be protected, your mileage may vary.

So if I was an enterprising criminal and I figured out vulnerabilities in high net worth peoples home automation I could use the opportunity to set up a seamless home invasion. No breaking of anything. Just enter grab the owner and have him initiate transfers at gunpoint.

When the target is high value enough, then no price is too much to pay to gain access.

Is it not true that some car thieves in Nigeria have signal jammers? The police have even made public statements to that effect.

I am happy that you have bridged the gap between what I said was possible and how it could be applied in real life to compromise security.

How do people get in? Usually through someone or something trusted.

One of the methods of attack is to learn of your wireless Access Point name, then clone it and make the signal so strong that it forces your devices tó connect to the AP with the highest signal strength. Then they grab everything it broadcasts and gain valuable intelligence, If you don't monitor would you know that such an attack is going on?

All this can be done from outside in a nearby vehicle without accessing the property

Like I said the value of the target determines the cost of protection.

Enough said.

Cause I really don't like to engage in long winded arguments.

I have dropped enough information for anyone who needs to take action to do so.

Sir, you wrote alot which makes no sense at all....so many of the social media sites or even banks connection you wrote above are almost end to end encrypted.....
Where did I mention not to take them serious ? My assertions are simple....
1.Does your home automation contain your BVN and Bank info ??
3.you hackers are intrested in this kind of info ?
2.which bank does not provide secure end to end connection

Like said a simple switch/router with WPA2 and AES encryption is enough for ANY HOME .
If you have multiple access points also known as routers....creating a firewall or access-list is enough.......any tunneling or so called VPN is an is an OVERKILL if its not a public network...

You can even create trusted sites on your router if you want...this not necessary but an extra care.

Again it's your house do as you like ...this is just free unsolicited lecture ...all the best sir

This is a very good recommendation.

Aventures:
My advice to terrace Buyers: please engage a trusted engineer to help you monitor what the developer is building from scratch to finishing. Let him check even the designs before committing Kobo, honestly I am talking form unpleasant experience of some xlents that I am doing retrofitting for. If the house is fully built. Ensure your developer give you as built drawings, indemnity letter on the structural integrity.
One of the experience I have recently was on one of my client house a unit out of 4 terraces. The house is failing structurally and we need t provide retrofitting solution , then we discover that the developer don't even have the drawings anymore in their archive,, the structural members could not be located so the client has to pay huge money for ultrasound test, and lastly you need permission of other occupants before you can do any major structural amendment as the buildings a joined together. Avoid all this headache by being more diligent.

I'm with you on this.

Over thinking is going on. I'm using wireless and only wired where necessary as an example my cameras and only because of POE. I just don't want a layperson to read all this and think wireless is not good. It is very good when properly configured. Anyone doing home automation will do some configuration. It goes with the territory.

You’re touching my area of strength.

I did the integration of network infrastructure in the foremost malls in Lagos, we had wires running into all spaces not because we can’t afford wireless infrastructures but because we want a secure network in regards to potential data interference or theft.

Whether wireless or wired network, with good network management system - which integrates both wired and wireless infrastructure, you can always go to sleep without worries.

Well done sir. I retired 2010 grin

There’s are few things we can’t discuss on this platform when it comes to wireless security.

Here’s a piece of advice to homeowners:

1. Always run your network on uninterruptible power supply.
2. Use POE switch to maintain uptime on all device in event of power failure. No be POE switch go provide backup power o grin
3. Install some Dummy Security Cameras to create a false sense of security in some areas.
4. Instead of manually provisioning your devices for network connectivity use cloud-based solutions that can push your settings to end-user devices without human interference. I mean each device on the network download their configurations directly from the cloud. There are several solutions that provide unified management of your devices - no matter how many thousand - from a single dashboard.
5. Stop using the cheap and common devices.
6. If possible DIY your install. Gbogbo aso ko la nsa l’orun. No be all clothe dem dey spread for sun.

For those who don’t know, before HIVs, there are malwares.

Anytime you see those funny pop ups on your system, one or more device on your network may have been affected and the hacker can configure it as a host and use your WIFI network to reach other devices.
If you think it’s nothing, be careful you don’t make huge transfer to a wrong website due to website redirects.

shocked shocked

In 2009, one of our high profile client who works for Ford Foundation need remote access to her Office Network which is about 50 miles away from where she live.

How do you resolve this scenario without VPN? A point to point connection over 50 miles will surely fail if not an overkill.

_________

Scenario 2:

Some years back, a leading bank was forecelly ejected on court order from their rented office in Marina, Lagos and we were asked to provide... make I no talk again.

Are we supposed to buy over 50 staffs MTN modem and connect them to their office network via public network?

This is not the place for this sha.
