In an upgrade, you bring someone who already has a pedigree, not someone to start a competition for places.

For example, we did an upgrade with Partey, Tierney, and White. They were brought in to take over their respective positions.

Ramsdale Vs Leno was not an upgrade. Ramsdale was brought in to compete with Leno. That's a makeup. Had we signed someone like Ederson or Allison, it would be an upgrade. Because they would have the automatic no 1 shirt.

You might say Ramsdale is not an upgrade but he was really an upgrade in Arteta's eyes. Cos he didn't even give Leno an opportunity to even compete with Ramsdale. He was displaced without thinking twice.

Bentancur and kuluveski are pure upgrade in that Tottenham team. Conte needed someone to displace Winks and he went for juventus player who was mostly a starter in that team and a Uruguay int'l. How he's seen not an upgrade(since he has pedigree and experience) over winks who was displaced after bentancur coming is what's surprising. Same thing as kuluveski who was already a known youngster in that juventus team over bergwijn and Moura (both grossly inconsistent)

Most of the examples you gave as upgrade isn't even upgrade according to your definition sef. I for one knows that someone like White and Gabriel are makeups using your definition cos actually they weren't even competing with anybody. Especially white.

No Luiz, no mustafi, (recognised starters). Just Holding and chambers whom aren't starters sef.

White had some pedigree before joining. He was already with England at the Euros.

Ramsdale/Leno as an upgrade was a mistake, I have already addressed that.

Bentacour to Spurs does not sound as an upgrade for me because they had Dier playing DM and was moved to defense. That looks like makeup. If you call it an upgrade, it's up to you.

This whole thing is really based on personal perspective, especially that of the manager or club who did the deal.

I did give Ramsdale a chance. Ask anybody. Though initially I took him as backup to Leno, but he proved he should be No1. What I loved about him was his game management and ability to communicate. That for me was the key in his good performances.

Ask those who run football clubs. They don't do upgrades in Jan. That's because (as I have said before) it's risky, it's expensive, and the desired players aren't readily available because the current clubs won't release them. There may be one or two exceptions but this is generally the feeling and also generally the case.

Again, like I said before, whether you call a player an upgrade or makeup, largely depends on you. It's a relative thing. I see Ramsdale as a makeup signing because we needed to give the goalkeeping dept some competition not necessarily to drop Leno is no 1.

But someone like Tierney was actually brought to take over the LB role from Kolasinac- an upgrade. Tomi was a makeup because we lost Bellerin. He was a direct replacement. Odegaard was to add balance, as we didn't have an AM apart from ESR who considers himself a winger. So that was a makeup too. Partey was an upgrade on Elneny. Lokonga was a makeup. Some cases are just left to individual perspective.
