Some NATO members want to use Ukraine conflict to weaken Russia, says Ankara’s foreign minister

Turkey wants to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, while some other NATO members would like to see it drag on as a way to harm Russia, Ankara’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday in a TV interview. In a lengthy appearance on CNN Turk, Cavusoglu addressed Turkey’s decision not to sanction Moscow and why the Istanbul talks between Russia and Ukraine failed, among other things.

“There are countries within NATO that want the Ukraine war to continue. They see the continuation of the war as weakening Russia. They don’t care much about the situation in Ukraine,” Cavusoglu said.

While he did not name any names, US President Joe Biden said earlier this month that the conflict in Ukraine “could continue for a long time,” which was echoed by the former CIA chief of Russian operations.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said after a phone call with G7 leaders on Tuesday that the West is united in not allowing Russia to win and determined to “continue to arm the Ukrainian military so that it can continue to defend itself against [Russian] attack.”

Turkey has decided not to join the US-led sanctions against Russia because they are unilateral, unlike the “binding sanctions decided at the UN,” Cavusoglu told CNN Turk. Ankara articulated its position on the first day of the Ukraine conflict, which is to continue diplomatic contacts with both sides, as “a country that both sides trust.”

While Turkey did not expect much after the first Russia-Ukraine talks in Antalya, “hopes were high” after the follow-up talks in Istanbul, Cavusoglu revealed. However, Ukraine backtracked from the agreement reached there after images of the alleged massacre in Bucha, which Kiev blamed on Russian troops. Moscow has denied the allegations.

Cavusogly also shed light on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s demand for security guarantees from NATO.

“Nobody agrees with Zelensky's request for NATO's Article 5 guarantees,” the minister said, referring to the alliance’s famous mutual defense clause. “No country has accepted this proposal. The US, UK and Canada do not accept this either. Of course, Turkey does not accept this. In principle, no one opposes this guarantee, but the terms of it are not clear.”

Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

Turkey is wise in their decision.

West is playing double faced game with Ukraine and sadly zelensky is playing into their hands all in the name of we need amunitions. Scores of Ukrainian has lost their lives on what can be followed thru diplomatically.

You guys should stop explaining.
We know the real reason behind the "neutrality". It is all about economic benefits
of no sanctions.

When Turkey shot down Russian warplane over its airspace in 2015, it banked on NATO's
support in case Putin decides to retaliate.

Turkey then didn't aim for neutrality when its own airspace was breached.

Why are you crying more than the bereaved?
Shouldn't you be happy that Putin your lord is winning the war?

According to you, Zelensky should have rejected all ammunitions and surrendered his country for "peace".

sad Turkey don't seem like they're on NATO'S side again.

It almost seems like they were forced to join NATO against their own will.

That foreign minister should keep shut, as he is obviously clueless!!

I noticed that these countries always have a way of dragging the US into mud, whenever anything ugly pops up in the world..

If not Russia that is behaving like an uncircumcised Philistines, what's wrong with Ukraine taking the decision of joining a particular association??

Despite the destructive atrocities of Vlad Pig in Ukraine, the US/NATO has refused to fully engaged them, yet some people feel " US is afraid of Russia", Russian military that's a little better than the Nigerian military..

For your info, 1)Russia is no match with the US..
2) The US/NATO reluctancy, to actively defend Ukraine has nothing to do with economic/political benefits. They NATO just understand that two wrongs can't make a right and human lives are considerably important...

USA doesn’t force nations to join alliances. Russia forced forced former Soviet Republics to join USSR through conquest. Similar thing was done in Afghanistan between 1979 to 1989.

Relationship of Russia with her neighbors
Azerbaijan- cold
Belarus- warm but complicated
China- chess game
Estonia- enemy
Finland- enemy
Georgia- enemy
Kazakhstan- cold
North Korea- mutual
Latvia- enemy
Lithuania- enemy
Mongolia- neutral
Norway- enemy
Poland- enemy
Ukraine-enemy
Japan- enemy but complicated
Sweden- enemy
Turkey- enemy but complicated
United States- enemy

You will seek support from strangers when your family land is taken from you. Think before you talk. No country is ready to joke with thier sovereignty. Besides Russia was the first country to fail on the Budapest agreement, where Ukraine offered it nukes for security guarantee from Russia.

Zelenskyy still doesn't get it, does he? Or perhaps he is just being stupid. Some So called world powers will just use Ukraine as testing groung for the various weapons they've developed over the years without testing their efficacy. Remember the Iraq/Iran war that became a battleground for the US/Russian army....

I weep for any Ukrainian that doesn't know it's time to flee to another country.
