Imagine working in a good organization with a great reputation , good pay and a future. You are new or quite junior . You accepted a job you are maybe "overqualified for" and have seniors with fewer degrees etc . You are told you would be on probation for one year

Sometimes you see mistakes or shockers e.g you are given a full time secretary introduced to you by your head manager as "Excellent and experienced with great IT skill after 2 weeks you discover that she does not know what a zip file is, she cannot use PowerPoint and you need this several times a week plus she comes to work 1-2 hours late ,goes home early and makes plenty mistakes. She is actually a permanent member of staff and very popular

You are a new supervisor in a huge factory you soon discover that every month you sign for 15 tankers of diesel but you checked by staying to supervise every delivery for one month and found only 9 were delivered and that is what you need . You call the operator and his crew they all say they counted 15 .They are permanent staff. When you repeat that you counted 9 the supervisors look at his team and said "I must be getting old and not counting very well. what do you think?" They replied "Oga yo done der old Supol say make you go Sempe"

You are to be a new Vice -Principal at a secondary school . You discover that one of teachers in school cannot read or write but has been teaching there for 2 years. She goes to class to teach but never writes anything . One day you give her a document to read she claims her glasses are missing somehow you get to find out and she confesses that she cannot read and her certificates are forged

What do you do?

you do the job to the best of your abilities, and if one day you have the chance to talk to your oga at the top, explain the situation in a subtle way.

Sometimes you have to take drastic action but it could be an opportunity to be honest with the staff and offer them training and rehabilitation . It requires wisdom

It can be so annoying sometimes!

Colleagues with lesser passion for the job
Colleagues with poor work ethic
Colleagues that are not really competent

Mehn, if you ever get to be with these people ehn they'll drag you down sometimes, especially when you are trying to cover up and do extra work but still get paid same salary at the end of the month cry

Worst is you can't report them unless your oga notice and decides to do something cos you gasto pity them and not try to block someone else's source of income

OP you are lucky to have someone like me here to give great advice free of charge. I will advise you to focus on the job you are paid to do and leave others alone. If you notice your coworker or supervisor stealing or slacking on the job seize that opportunity to become the best version of yourself and hopefully someone will notice and promote you. You should never snitch on another colleague to elevate your stance in an organisation because at the end of the day you are just a number and you are easily replaceable. Mind your your business and good luck.

This is where EQ and street smarts come into play.

Not everything is what it seems on the surface.

You have been there for barely one week - do you actually think you know what is going on?

Please always apply for jobs you're good at.
And if you're lucky to get a job with little prior knowledge/experience

Kindly level up, don't wait to be pushed to learn new things that'll make you better at your workplace.

In the civil service where there are loads of them, it can be extremely frustrating. If you complain they say you're not a team worker.

Have patience with them and teach them. If they don't get better after a specific time frame, then you can apply pressure or query them.

I remember when I was incompetent at some things, I would have loved it if people had patience. Some did, others didn't.

If you sack them, that's assuming you could, how sure are you you'd get someone better to replace them?

It is not easy especially when your superior is a dullard, just apply wisdom and hope that one day, you will be in that position to dictate the pace.

Even when the output of that colleague directly impacts you or your KPI? If an incompetent person consistently gives you a flawed report that you use in making strategic business decisions, are you saying you'd not "snitch" and have the person moved somewhere else?

Mind your business or teach them if you can moreover not everyone is willing to learn from a junior who just joined the organization

I am having a similar experience. My direct superior can be incredible sometimes, with incessant paperwork errors.

In my office, contractors have a certain percentage mark-up on their contract but my superior gives them mark-ups that are higher than what was on their contract. I found out that he is not in possession of the contract documents and didn't bother to ask either. More like willfully donating company's money to contractors without checking.

100% what I would say.

I do all these for my colleagues, trying to cover their incompetence, bad work ethics and all. But the day I was confronted for taking charge of a task we were to do together which they give no priority to, I chose to let everyone be.

Now the boss is really seeing their incompetence, it is me that still end up clearing their mess.

I've learnt to do my best and allow others to show their incompetence. I have vowed to myself, none of them will do any task better than me.
