If being 14th cousins, twice removed, is enough for you to not expect similarities beyond the common human features, why would you ask for them in “cousins” separated by billions of generations?

It's quite simple, it's based on the principles that:
1. All life forms are made of genetic materials mostly in form of DNA (including humans). These genetic materials controls the physical characteristics and metabolism of organisms including humans.
2. These genetic materials are passed down to offsprings via sexual or asxuals reproduction. In simple term, hereditary.

3. During the lifetime of some organisms, their DNA can change slightly via mutations caused by radiations, chemicals and other factors. In asexual organisms, these mutations are automatically passed down to their offsprings. If the mutation occurs in the gamete of sexual reproducing organisms, they get passed down to offpsings. Some of these mutations can be harmful, some can be beneficial depending on the environmental conditions.

4. Genetic materials in Organisms also undergo recombination before and during reproduction. These recombinations in DNA ensures that offspring do not look exactly like their parents and their siblings. This is why don jazzy doesn't look exactly like D'prince.

5. No 3 and 4 cause variation in a population of organisms. This variation makes sure that every single member of that population do not have exact same genetic material. (well, unless identical twins)

6. Factors like environmental conditions, competition for resources select the genes in a popuation organisms that are best suited for that current environment, the genes that are not selected have lesser chance of having offpsings and may become extinct after some time. E.g. Untreated, the environment will mostly likely not allow genes like Sickle cell, Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington's Disease etc have offsprings in a population of humans. This is explains the biology of drug resistance in microorganisms, how the environment we humans create with drugs select the gene that is best suited for it hence resistance.
This is called natural selection.

7. If these selections, mutations and recombinations accumulate over billions, millions and thousands of Years, population of organisms will change genetically and hence physically leading to speciation.
Speciation is when a species of organism can no longer mate with its ancestors or distant cousins (distant in term of thousands, millions and billions of years and not your cousin in Nigeria kind of relationship) because of multiple mutations and recombination that leads to huge genetic variation. These accumulated changes also result in visible differences in organism of different species but with significant similarities as well both phenotypically and genotypically.
This explains why we see extinct fossils and we are able to extrapolate their similarities with current organisms.
