The US and Russia must hold talks to try and put an end to the fighting in Ukraine, Italian PM Mario Draghi said on Wednesday - a day after meeting Joe Biden.

Mr Draghi said that he and Mr Biden recognised that the road to peace was very complicated, but said everyone needed to make an effort to help Russia and Ukraine find a solution.

"There are so many possibilities, but before we even get to that point, there is an effort that needs to be made and it is an effort that all allies, particularly Russia and the United States, need to make to sit down at a table," Mr Draghi said.

The Italian PM added he is confident that Moscow's demand that European buyers pay for Russian gas in roubles will not lead to a disruption of supplies.

The European Commission has warned that complying with the ask might breach EU sanctions, but Mr Draghi said it was a "grey zone". "As a matter of fact, most of the gas importers have already opened their accounts in roubles with Gazprom," he said.
