Prime Minister Viktor Orban cites the conflict in Ukraine to invoke extraordinary powers


Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, citing the conflict in Ukraine, just hours after parliament approved the measure as a way for Budapest to respond to crisis situations.

Orban announced the emergency in a video address on his Facebook page. The emergency regime takes effect at midnight, and the first measures will be revealed on Wednesday.

“To safeguard Hungary’s national security interests, to make sure we stay out of the war and to protect Hungarian families, the government needs room to maneuver and the ability to act immediately,” Orban said in the announcement.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Hungarian parliament passed a constitutional amendment giving the prime minister authority to declare an emergency if there is a war or humanitarian disaster in a neighboring country, in addition to the existing crisis categories. Orban’s critics claim this would allow him to “rule by decree” and bypass parliament.

Similar criticism was levelled against Orban in March 2020, when parliament granted him sweeping emergency powers to deal with Covid-19. He insisted the emergency would be limited in duration, and it was eventually revoked in June that year.

I don't like Viktor Orban due to his far right policies, but truth be told, hunger will wire Africa first before any European or European Union country for that matter.

You forgot that if the Europeans ever get to anywhere near Africa's current hunger level, there will be protests all over Europe.

While Europeans were distributing money (Covid benefits payments), hampers and opened food banks for the less privileged, the government in Africa was even locking up food donated to the masses.

Yes. Becuase protest is a right in a democratic country, but the protest won't get any where as bad as the type of protest we see in poor countries e.g..the End Sars protests.

I also can't ever picture Europe getting anywhere near Africa's current hunger level. Agriculture is big and highly mechanised in Europe despite their not too friendly for agriculture weather. Fly over Europe (from the UK to Germany) and you will see farmlands everywhere from the Sky. Same view when you fly over USA or Canada. However; fly over Nigeria/Niger or West Africa, and all you will see are forest and uncultivated lands (Potential agric land wasting away).

My opinion in a reply to a tweet on a similar topic late last month. Nigeria is blessed but the leaders are cursed.
