A lady left a panel and was crying, my guy had his interview immidietely after d lady then he over heard one of d panel saying he graded her 49 points and d other panel also said that's what she deserve to get bcuz he graded her 40 plus too......what u should ask yourself is, supposing it was grades wic of cause are fixed points would d panel hve doubted the points he scored her?? All am saying is guys let's pray we meet gud panels. A lady got this scholarship without any question being asked or telling them about her SOP. She said as soon as d panels saw her they told her she came with a good energy omoh they begin to pray and advice her ooo that's hw she ended her Interview. Mine was dxem, as I was leaving I heard the other panel that was recording my degree and O'level grades asked one of the panel In charge saying "which points are we going to give him" I been want stay hear am ooo I say mek I respect myself, mek I no cme hear point wey go give me hypertension

There's such a thing as weighted grading. For example 49/100 for the interview can be converted to a scale of 20 or 30 or whatever weight the interview carries overall.

One thing is certain;

They graded your best 5 O'level subjects, whether you combine results or not. The 5 subjects must include English and Mathematics.

Not for everyone. For some people they chose specific subjects. They chose Chemistry, Physics and Biology for me and two of these subjects have nothing to do with my field.

Getting this scholarship borders on grace/luck. The competition is very stiff. In my state for UK PhD there are 50 candidates and 23 candidates for GFM PhD. And from past lists, there would be 2-3 successful scholars from each group.

Everyone should just go and start praying. Lol smiley

Based on the number of people invited for interviews, there's over 100 candidates for MSc and presumably around the same for PhD. Realistically, the percentage is more 3/100 for either scheme at best. If they shortlisted 8800 people in total from 37 provinces, thats around 238 candidates per state assuming equal success rates for applicants. It's possible there's more or less from your state. Needing grace is an understatement.

Good morning all,

I did my interview in Ibadan on the 2nd of June. I was in the Engineering group before 3 professors.

Firstly I was told to introduce myself after which they asked for my O levels, I saw them input my grades in Math, English, Physic, Chemistry and TD into their system.

They asked for my Bsc, MSc and Certifications.
My interviewers didn't seem to know much about Mechanical Engineering and/or my research area in particular they where more Petroleum inclined.

They were critical about having very recent reference citing and listing, asked about my decision to go abroad when I could do the Phd in Nigeria. It was quite seamless for me.

Hoping for the best.

*Note, we are all competing with people from out various states. If you come from a very competitive state, the competition would be very stiff. Just FYI.

Not difficult to find people with 5 O level distinctions in every state. Not difficult to find the same people with at least 2.1 or merits. The oral interviews aren't very rigorous. Comes down to very close margins.

For those who may want to calculate their chances, my observations during the interview has led me to this template (my observation);

1. Class of degree = 30marks.
first-class =30, 2'1 =24 etc

2. English, Math + best 3 Olevel grades = 30marks
A1=6marks, B2=5marks, B3=4marks etc

3. SOP + your oral Presentation = 25marks

4. Max 5 professional memberships = 10marks
each membership carries 2mrks...

this was shared by emeritus007 at the time and I alluded that it was correct for MSc, for PhD, the weighting for WAEC is the same but degree weighting was less. Something similar sha

There's 5 marks missing. Perhaps publications?

No lie here... As for me, it's God's grace and Inshallah.
I had a great interview last year and a more fantastic one this year. Hope they don't give a whole Delta only 4 slots again this year when 1 is already reserved for a female candidate. I heard of someone who got the PhD on the 4th attempt. I don weak by this 3rd time already. So, this is my last shot. #WeMove.

In this case, I would say the 2:1 guy had a publication and/or membership while the first class guy doesn't have.

What I've heard about ptdf is that they rate Publication/membership ahead of anything. If both of them doesn't have Publication or membership, it is the first class guy that will get it.

A friend of mine (with 2:1) got the scholarship in 2018 and he said to me that it was because of his Publication that made him get it. He said he saw people from his state with first class that came for the interview. Probably if those first class guys have a Publication then, they will be the one to get it.
Yabani1122:

What can you say about the statement singled out boldly?? Two guys from dxem state applied to UK, one had a 1st class and good o'level grades and the other had a 2:1 with O'level grades not as good as d former, wen result came out, d 2:1 guy got the scholarship infact they both graduated from dxem department, what can u say about this??

Oga everything boils down to grace no matter ur grades wether low or high. For example d panel might decide to grade ur SOP(the most important) full marks, ur dressing full marks even though u dres rough, ur knowledge of the subject matter full marks, recommendation full marks. Even though u hve 1st class and 5A's u cannot meet up with someone with those records even though the person has 2:1 or 2:2 and credits. I keep on saying this what PTDF are looking at is not ur certificates alone but what do u hve to offer. Let's u hve the highest point and ur recommendation and SOP were graded very low oga 4get am, they might as well assume u only cram and pass of cause we have seen so many 1st class that even 3rd class from anoda school are better than them(Facts). In 2020 PTDF Interview, one of the panel told me "U DON'T HAVE RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS AND U WANT US TO GIVE YOU SCHOLARSHIP??" can u imagine, despite I am an M.sc applicant, he did not even look at my certificate grades sef. The man was offset with me because I didn't present my original WAEC. he was just angrily asking me for other things. So u c bcuz of this d man will just grade other score very low, na Nigeria we dey where one thing will be use to disqualify any other thing. SOP/Research proposal are the most important, no body go spend him money for u to go and cram and obtain ur certificates, that's y PTDF invites even 2:2 with industry experience. Many scholars won Erasmus and Chinese government scholarships, if u check there SOP very superb. A guy was told by his panel he scored 88 points, to show u hw close he was with d panels but my guy name no show for d final list. Omoh na by grace ooo, viewing dat list of shortlisted applicants na prayer go scale u through not ur points ooooo

Delta state had only 4 last year (3 male, 1 female) for PhD where neighbouring Edo and Anambra had 5 or 6. I couldn't understand the rationale.
I hope they do better this time

Check again bros, Delta get 6

And mind you, the last one, those awarded per state were doubled because of the impact of COVID-19 which affected adverts for 2021, which meant Delta got 12MSCs and I think 6 abi 8PHDs.

Na MSc you be bros abi PhD?

You people keep talking as if what you're saying and what I'm saying are mutually exclusive. They grade everything across the board. Only candidates recommended by the panel will be selected obviously but then they can't award everyone the panel recommends. Then it goes back to how you scored in all other departments.

You have to show a certain level of excellence ACROSS the board not just the interview and not just certificates. You gave two examples that If you bothered to take to heart you'd see by now. Like I said, no need to keep going back and forth on this because none of us truly knows what they're looking for and we're just operating under assumptions.

I am not trying to discourage anyone here but I know I am yet to see anyone with a bad undergraduate degree and O'Levels be selected. So you can't sit there and delude yourselves into thinking it doesn't matter. I am not speaking based on what I want to happen and them scoring one way or another doesn't really favor me in anyway. I'm just being pragmatic.

Like I said, way too many variables in this thing that it's hard to nail down what a sure path to victory is. Maybe he didn't do well in the interview. Maybe there was no vacancy for the country he would've been sent to so they gave the slot to someone else. Maybe some people in his state had all those accomplishments and more. Someone introduced another factor here, the long leg factor. Maybe someone stole his slot and gave to his nephew. cheesy

If most officials in PTDF and other influential figures are from the North like you guys already admitted, given limited number of slots per state, don't you think northerners trying to get in based on merit are more in danger of being kicked out of the list out of nepotism by their kinsmen? We all face different types of danger and the KA states in the north are just as competitive as any southern state to begin with.

As someone had said , panel's recommendation is number 1 which is based on your interview performance and convincing power.

The grades are used to select out the final list from the number of recommended candidates.

Your chosen course is also important, any course that you can do the program here in Nigeria no need for overseas.

Dress formally, but not really carries marks because not all candidates wear jackets.
