We have most courses in this country. Take for instance a single course like Chemistry.
But my dear, you can't beat the exposures and state of the art learning facility and labs that studying abroad will give you.
For instance, I know someone that did software engineering in masters in a public institution here in Nigeria, they never wrote a single code.

Meanwhile, from my observation, I think Imo is the most competitive state and Taraba or so with about 12 candidates is the least competitive. (Only MSC UK)

This year, I think Publications and Professional Membership certifications are interchangeable for the MSc applicants and it is limited to maximum of 5. You will notice that when you are on that section of the PTDF portal, both publications and professional certifications are listed in the same input field but you can't add more than 5. Hence, I am thinking 5 publications or 5 professional certifications or a combination of both will still amount to the same maximum mark. Thus publications may not be needed if you already have 5 professional certifications and vice versa. However, for the PhD, I think publications is a must while certifications may not be as important.

PhD Interview experience of a mentee (Virtual)

Mentee was greeted by two panelists who are industry experts and previous PTDF Scholars.

After greetings, they alluded that the profile was strong - Profile is indeed strong 7A1s first class bachelors and distinction in masters, 5 professional memberships and 2 publications.

The interviewers seemed impressed with the proposal presentation and recommended focus areas in the research about increasing production efficiency and wished candidate the best of luck.

Most centers didn't even ask for publications period and only considered Memberships for MSc. Here's my theory; if 10 marks were earmarked for memberships and 5 for publications, centers that only considered memberships weighed each membership as 3 marks as opposed to 2 where as centers that considered both used the original formula where each publication carried 1 mark and each membership 2 marks.

Not really. A lot of middle eastern countries for instance are more developed than Indian subcontinent countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Based on my experience you can't even begin to compare the intelligence of these demographics at all. Furthermore, literacy is different from intelligence. There are a lot of regions in Nigeria that were historically more developed than other regions in Nigeria before falling behind because of missing the train on modern education in the 20th century. It will surprise so many people here to know that from a historical perspective Borno was by far the most advanced and literate society in Nigeria up until the end of the 19th century. This is not an issue you can make a blanket statement on. Literacy is not intelligence.

Given the resources middle east countries control, the indo-asian countries you mention would dust all the middle east countries put together considering how developed they are now with the little resources they have.

The issue at hand is even more dire...talking about a people who control the resources of the country. However you see it bro, intelligence, literacy, smartness or whatever you call it all mean the same thing... and a people's development is subject to this parameter

For those who may want to calculate their chances, my observations during the interview has led me to this template (my observation);

1. Class of degree = 30marks.
first-class =30, 2'1 =24 etc

2. English, Math + best 3 Olevel grades = 30marks
A1=6marks, B2=5marks, B3=4marks etc

3. SOP + your oral Presentation = 25marks

4. Max 5 professional memberships = 10marks
each membership carries 2mrks...

All candidates and respective states are listed. If your name is there and you didn't receive any invite, you can tell the authorities to schedule you for interview.

Also, note that you are competing with only your states in each category i.e. successful candidates of United Kingdom and F/M/G candidates lists will be in a separate category.

Some states have lesser competition than other states due to the number of shortlisted applicants.

Guys good afternoon. Please I have a question. I will be having my interview on Tuesday in Abuja, can I review my proposal and present it to them. As in submit the reviewed version my proposal

With data analytics, we can see that Kano had the highest applicants while Taraba had the lowest applicants. About 70% of shortlisted candidates opted for UK while 30% opted for F/G/M. About 70% of candidates opted for MSc while 30% of candidates opted for PhD.

The North Eastern zone had the highest applicants in both MSc and PhD.

I think so. They don't have your SOP you present it to them and grade you based on it's contents and your defence of it.


Mind you, some panels may not even ask for you SOP. Some may collect it and not even look at it.

Prof Liebermman! If this is true, irrespective of how good or bad our qualifications might be, only GOD can really determine who eventually gets the award at the end of the day. Because, overlooking things like SOP, publications , certifications by some panels or centers etc implies a lot.

I just figured the lists out. There's a list for GFM and one for UK below.

There's a total of 247 applicants shortlisted from my state. 103 for GFM and 144 for UK.

Well your SOP is not exclusive to what you write/type, its something they can deduce by asking questions so you don't necessarily have to submit a hard copy to them. At the end of the day you're right Engr, we are all at the mercy of providence.

Prof Lierbermann! That's why as humans we should learn not to be ethnocentric or bigoted in this modern world. A typical Nigerian will usually but wrongfully assume that Northerners are not as learned as their Southern counterparts. However, reading through your comments for the past 2 weeks or so have shown what sort of calibre your are. You are quite humble, articulate, sound , intelligent and persuasive in your engagements in this forum. I hope we will meet someday in greater pedestal of life. I also pray GOD will grant our heart desires in this competitive scholastic endeavour. The Christian Bible states the race is not to the swift neither is the battle to the strong but time and chance happens to them all. Anyone that wins at the day should be humble and grateful to GOD Almighty. Many are shortlisted but only few will be selected! May we be selected in JESUS Name! In the end, may all glory return to GOD!

You have it all wrong. India with Qatars resources for instance, heck even Pakistan with Qatar's resources will never be as developed as Qatar is right now. Pakistan has about 300 million people, Qatar has 1 percent of their population. Development is a lot more intricate than people understand.

Literacy and intelligence don't mean the same thing. Yes, the quality of your human resources which is significantly down to literacy is what ultimately determines what you can do with the hand you're dealt but it's important to make this distinction.

Population has nothing to do with anything, when people are dumb they are dumb! Russia has more population than Qatar yet has a society as developed as it, if not more. China has more than quadruple the size of Qatar yet is a more developed society than it.

Don't lose touch with reality trying to contest
a fact that is very glaring. The north has less smart people than other regions and it's evident in their growth and development.
