The issue is not China buying oil from Russia today, it's China saying they will honor oil contracts entered into before the war, but they won't honor or sign new contracts to buy Russian oil starting in May, it means they will start enforcing the sanctions starting in May after the expiration of the current oil contracts.

So, yes, it is OK for China to keep buying oil-based on contracts, but no more new contracts to honor the sanctions so starting in May, no more Russian oil for China.

SINGAPORE, April 6 (Reuters) - China's state refiners are honouring existing Russian oil contracts but avoiding new ones despite steep discounts, heeding Beijing's call for caution as western sanctions mount against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, six people told Reuters.

These are not private companies in China, they are state companies owned by the Chinese government, meaning the Chinese president himself is enforcing the sanctions against Russia.
