Decimus:Not without the supervision of the consultant (Radiologists) who is actually the one to decide the dose and degree of expose to the radiographers. In the actual sense, the radiographers are extremely subservient to the radiologists. In fact, the radiographers do the dirty work (radiographic procedures) and face the high risk of exposure to various level of radiation. And this is the basis for the arguements where that poster said nurses are extremely subservient to doctors while radiographers are not. |

eben28:D way we used to see nurses back then is no longer same sir. I'm not trying to disregard nurses at all. D fact still remains that Nigeria of nowadays is no longer Nigeria of oldies that nurses were hot cake. Many nurses are collecting below 50k here in Nigeria, registered nurses. |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by SIMPLIFIED(m): 10:36pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
If you plan to stay in Nigeria go for Radiography but if you intend to leave go for nursing. Currently Radiographers are in short supply and high demand as not many schools are offering it but with time it will get saturated like medlab and pharmacy. Radiographers are earning equal pay and sometimes higher than Medical officers in private employment currently which is far higher than what nurses are getting. But ease of migration is still fastest for nurses and more job reach and spread outside the country. If you finally migrate to USA and pursue Nurse practitioner or Travel nursing, you will be raking in good money. Also hazards of exposure to radiation over a long time is not much talked about for radiographers, to me they even deserve more pay with that daily work hazard |

| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by eben28(m): 10:36pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
emmanuelbrown26:Yes, this 50k is only applicable in private hospitals. And guess what the 50k is for like 6 to 8 hours in 3 or 4 times a week job. A nurse can combine one government job which pays like 110k with two private job of 50k each. In total she goes home with about 200k or more every month. When they get to abroad, the situation gets more merrier sef because they pay per hour. Then, you'll see nurses doing 2 to 3 jobs in the hospital plus home services join. By the time you add those cash up in a month, you'll understand what a better take-home-package means. |

eben28:What i shared with you is an excerpt from NHS in UK, did you see anywhere they mentioned Radiologists or that it must be done under their supervision? If you have any, kindly share. I'm not talking about your average Nigerian health care system here where everyone is involved in a power tussle and everyone want to be on top of another person without respecting one another job's specification or description. Radiotherapists don't need to wait for dose instructions from anyone, because Dosimetery is a vital part of their curriculum. Radiography is very vast and technical, It's easy for a common house officer to look down on a nurse with many years of experience, but the said house officer will be lost in a basic radiography unit. |

While going through your well detailed response I felt like a lecturer who is reading a very thorough answer to a question that was never asked. The result is a score of Zero. The topic is on Radiography not Radiology. So many students leave exam hall feeling they have destroyed the exam not knowing they failed woefully because they didn't read the question properly. SIMPLIFIED:Hazard allowance and call duty allowance for Radiographers are higher than that of Nurses. However, not all Radiographers deal with ionizing radiation, you can pick a niche that will allow you to avoid ionizing radiation totally. |

Galleryeasy:Oga, stop saying what u don't know. As far as Nigeria is concerned, no medical or paramedical profession come close to med & sug. Med lab, med radio, med rehab, nursing have similar salary scale while pharmacy have a little edge over the aforementioned professions. Then medicine tops others. As a matter of facts, I'm currently studying med lab. That is how the FG structured the salary scale of medical profession. Ur radiographer friend might have been in the profession for many years for him to earn that amount (280k) which is something an house officer (med and sug) fresh graduate earns. Make ur findings. |

| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by eben28(m): 11:05pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
Decimus:Sorry, reasonable doctors dont look down on nurses. You see those ones beefing nurses and other health workers... they are weak doctors with nothing on their head other than some bragging rights. We are trained to even learn some procedures from them. I could remember one of the senior doctors telling us students to learn giving IM from the nurses cos he said no body will teach us. So, I respect nurses and other health workers. Attached herein is a standing order in the UK as regards who is to give Radiotherapy. EoD

eben28:Bro I am not trying to belittle Nursing but the fact that you are trying to prove is wrong....have u been in a medical settings b4 ?do u even see how doctors shout on and question nurses? It's never possible with Radiographers. We enjoy mutual respect mbbs do radiological courses in 500l fact but they don't know anything in Radiography what dey have little idea on is Ultrasound the rest zero. I have them as room mates. U said as a nurse u can open hospital the truth is anybody can open hospital even if u are barber but u most employ a doctor to oversee ur hospital as a nurse u ll report to him if not you will be penalized....this is not possible in radio-diagnostic or radiotherapeutic center. Quite alright u can seek the expertise of a doctor because medical field is a chain but he can't oversee ur center You said we can't treat...it's obvious you don't know anything about Radiography. We have diagnostic Radiography and therapeutic Radiography which we undergo courses on from 300level to 500l how to calculate the BED admiistration(biological effective dose) and management of the patient no radiologist (doctor) is licensed to administer this radiation dose or else he will be prosecuted his own job is to monitor the recovery processes. |

Analyst7:Check well....a radiologist is a medical personnel that studies Medicine and Surgery and Specified in a particular field (Radiology). A Radiographer is just a technician that calibrates machines and read its results. Just like the difference between an Ophthalmologist and an Optometrist. |

| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Amarisco(f): 11:13pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
Amayabor1:Calm down love. Nurses can become specialist nurses, ward matrons and even enter senior hospital administration. It’s not the same for radiographers. Their skills are more practical and in the field, than in clinical direction and administration |

Decimus:Find out from recent house officers. I know some on 250k |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Decimus(f): 11:15pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
TheOmoney:Lol, don't you think it's better to ask questions and learn if you don't know much about a subject? It's even Medical Physicists and Biomedical Engineers that calibrate equipment before a procedure. |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by FlordFlorez(m): 11:17pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
Decimus:Fed hospitals like FMC, teaching hospitals. Basic salary plus call duty, hazard allowance, etc can be up to 250k and above. So it's close to 280k. Before a radiographer or other medical related courses can earn that amount they must have worked for more than 6years. |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Oninure(m): 11:17pm On Jun 30, 2022 |
TheOmoney:You are wrong they are not technician....we have x-ray technician separate under us that's 2yrs program. You guys need to read about Radiography or wait to see the profession in 20 years time |

Lawrencethegoat:Nursing is better. As a qualified registered nurse, there are job opportunities available in the UK and USA. There are also job opportunities in many rich countries. I follow a Nigerian nurse on Tiktok who is based in Finland. She has been there for 7 years. |

oluseyiforjesus:The question you should ask yourself is, how many Radiography tech are needed in a hospital per shift compare to number of nurses needed per shift. Do the maths and make your choice. Nursing is the best way to go. Plus you can grow in your nursing career. |

| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by arinzos(m): 6:24am On Jul 01, 2022 |
Lawrencethegoat:Everything depends on your plans. Whether you want to practice in Nigeria or Abroad. If your plan is to stay here in Nigeria, then, Radiography is the better option. You will earn well. Nurses still suffer from quackery such as the popular "Nurse Eliza". Also those from SON further make their bargaining power very low in the private sector. I have friends in radiography that are covering hospitals for 50-100k because they are not yet radiographers. They are still final year students. Imagine what it would be when they graduate. In the private sector, Radiographers earn higher than Nurses. While in government hospitals, salaries are the same. Nursing has more career progression compared to Radiography. If your plan is to japa, Omo! Nursing is the way to go! In the past one year, 5 of my senior Nursing friends have all traveled to either UK or USA with jobs waiting for them. Only 1 for Radiography. It is easier to japa with a Nursing certificate than Radiography certificate whether with HCPC or not. Infact, MLS graduates leave the country more than Radiography. Finally, it all depends on your plan. |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Amayabor1: 6:56am On Jul 01, 2022 |
Amarisco:Same with Radiography love. They can go on to specialise in ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, radiograph interpretation, computed tomography, mammography, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine. As for being in senior hospital administration, I agree nurses tend to have the upper hand here, but this advantage occurs mostly in government owned hospitals. |

Amayabor1:They can even work out of the hospital wall like in Airports for scanning conceived drugs and lugages, oil companies and refinaries, Oceanography even veterinary hospitals(animals) also in military or research institute that deals with nuclear radiation weaponry all these are called (industrial Radiography).....meanwhile the only place nurse is employable is in the hospital unless she go do nanny...lol |

Decimus:We are not talking about whether Radiography is divided into diagnostic or therapeutic Radiography. We are asking, do Radiographers (Therapeutic R) treat cancers? Treatment of cancer is not a one man show. It involves many disciplines. It may include Surgeons, Clinical oncologists (called radiation oncologists in the US), pathologists, Medical oncologists, etc. That the therapeutic radiographer operates the machine that deliver the radiotherapy to patients with cancer doesn't mean he treats cancer. |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Oninure(m): 7:44am On Jul 01, 2022 |
Amayabor1:So what are dey doing? We specialize in Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy and all of that someone is administering radiation used in killing ur wayward cells u said it not treatment in such a way that if he is not there no one can handle and give the dose by law....because it's life threatening the same radiation use to cure cancer can be used to create cancer and other spill over effects....let me ask u a nurse that give maleria injection and manage it is that not treatment? I think it's high time u people learnt about Radiography or perhaps the course is still been underated for non-medic like u. The course that is not even up to 20yrs in Nigeria and it's gaining ground day by day comparedd to mbbs nursing pharmacy and like which are 80yrs+....wait for 5Oyrs Radiography |
| Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by Decimus(f): 7:58am On Jul 01, 2022 |
Amayabor1:What does the word therapeutic means? What happens to cancerous cells when you bombard them with Radiation? Do you think "machines" are the only source of ionizing radiation? In Brachytherapy, a Radiotherapist injects a capsule or seed containing radioactive materials like cesium-131 into the site of the tumor to kill the cancerous cells there. Again if you call someone a radiotherapist and argue that he doesn't carry out treatment, then what does the therapy in the name stands for? Note: if you are still a student or you are not in the medical profession, just forget about it. |
