Six million households in Britain face the possibility of morning and evening blackouts this winter to maintain sanctions against Russia, as do consumers across Europe. This is despite Europe pouring about $1bn a day into Russia to pay for the gas and oil it continues to consume. This seems crazy. Proposals by the EU to halt the payments are understandably being opposed by countries close to Russia and heavily dependent on its fossil fuels; Germany buys 12% of its oil and 35% of its gas from Russia, figures that are much higher in Hungary.

The EU in Brussels seems not to know what to do. A diplomatic compromise has been raised – exempting sanctions on imports via pipeline, which would spare Hungary and Germany – but no practical plan has been agreed. The real reason is that arguments over the sanctions weapon have been reduced to macho rhetoric. They are supposed to induce a foreign regime to change some unacceptable policy. This rarely if ever happens, and in Russia’s case it has blatantly failed. Apologists now claim that sanctions are merely a deterrent, intended to work in the medium to long term. As war in Ukraine shifts into a different gear, that term could be long indeed.

Sanctions may have harmed Russia’s credit-worthiness, but the 70% surge in world gas prices alone has supercharged its balance of payments. Its current account trade surplus, according to its central bank, is now over three times the pre-invasion level. At the same time, sanctions are clearly hurting countries in western and central Europe who are imposing them.

If the sanctions aren't working, meaning Russia has figured out a way to be immune to it, why all these daily wailing?

There are some things you don't need something to analyze for you. Just common sense.

Example, Lockheed is sanctioned by China yet there's never a day that Lockheed has ever said, China should remove the sanctions because it's not working. Why? because the sanctions isn't working so no need to cry about it.

But you see Russia and their propagandists, every day, Ruble is doing better, sanctions don't work. EU should remove sanctions or they will suffer.
If it's not working, shut up about it, will you?

If they are working, why are they not doing what it was intended?

No mass deaths or mass poverty in Russia. People are going about their normal activities. Why are people not dropping dead in the streets of Moscow or St. Petersburg?

Why have the sanctions not stopped the war?

Why is the prospect of annexation of a section of Ukraine so bright?

And then why do EU countries have to sacrifice more than they have done without any results to show for it?

The daily wailing, as you called it, is because the people/countries imposing the sanctions are the ones hurting from them. Whether through shortage of food, or disruptions to food and energy supplies, it the people imposing the sanctions that are getting the short end of the stick.

Or have you not read how those who imposed sanctions are the ones accusing their adversary USING HUNGER AS A WEAPON OF WAR?

The sanctioned country's balance of trade is being boosted in bigger measure.

Do you have an idea what losing a third of your energy supplies could do to your economy in a month?

Wait till you see real uprising in Europe in coming months as a result of economic downturn before you realize that the "wailings" are calls for a common sense resolution.

❗Biden administration opposes Russian asset confiscation, - The New York Times

The White House is afraid that the confiscation of Russia's assets frozen due to sanctions could undermine the US's reputation as an investment haven, the White House told the NYT.

The US is trying to see if the confiscation of Russian funds might encourage other countries to convert their reserves into other currencies and keep them out of American hands. #UkraineWar #Russia #Ukraine

This war have really exposed the west and USA , that they relying on other countries economy for their country to survive. If all countries insist today that they won't to be paying in their local currency exchange for any transactions. Watch and see how their economy will down.
