Honestly speaking , Onyema brought this upon himself . Anybody who is not a civil servant that works at least 8-5 daily , pays his taxes and rates as well as pay for utility bills will be angered by what he wrote that day .

Like he’s gaming the system which other people paid for it to run effectively, he can’t turn back and say he’s trying to reform the society while at it . The thing no just go well.

Personally I detest civil servants(government workers )for their role in the root cause of what is wrong with this country . They get paid for doing absolutely nothing , their efficiency cannot be measured and they even make u pay for things that are part of their job description when u visit the various ministries . They make corruption so appealing ( which is why I’m not surprised Onyema doesn’t really feel bad about what he wrote that day )

I don’t even think Peter Obi would be proud of Onyema campaigning for him if he sees what he typed on nairaland concerning his work routine and the meter bypass thingy . I mean that’s the kind of stuff we read Peter Obi is coming to make right .

The defence would most likely be that our obsession with the USD creates an artificial demand which is causing the USD to rise against the Naira. grin

We shouldn't be bothered that our Naira is falling yet the exchange rate of 210/$ under Jonathan was used to campaign against him...lol

USD to Naira changed by like 80% from 2007 to 2015 when Jonathan left, and less than 8 years later we're seeing an almost 230% change in the exchange rate. We're an import-heavy economy with an insufficient balance of trade for our over 200 million population but we should not be bothered by exchange rates that are flying through the roof.

We shouldn't bother that the USD is rising to the Naira yet Emefiele keeps coming up with absurd policies to stabilize the Naira.
Saying he does not care is just funny.

Maybe when he enters, we would automatically start producing locally from August 2023

Lol...the Nigerian civil service is essentially a welfare program. The only serious civil servants I know of na those wey dey Lagos and that's probably cause it means they're always on ground to collect bribes. Once you see civil servant serious with work, just know say e don dey see opportunity to loot massively.

You're complaining that terrorists ransacked a prison facility without the guards putting up a fierce resistance but you're a truant who barely show up at your place of work, you're not different from the security guards who went missing in action.

Buhari we saw earlier in Nigeria is the one who ruled by command and fiats. Do this and that and everyone will obey. This Buhari does not have what it takes

Buhari's solution to everything is ban ban ban
You cannot rule Nigeria successfully without an iron fist and this is why only the Military can get this country back on track, set the foundations, set the structures and Democracy can take over from there.

Nigerians as people are the most unruly, the most corrupted, the most dishonest people in the world. Without an iron fist, you are just putting water in the basket.

Just look at the day to day micro-transactions in Nigeria and you get the idea that these army of crooks cannot be managed without infringing on people’s human rights.

And that is why nothing will change in this country . A guy I mentored who later got into Lagos State civil service anytime we see fills my ears with a lot of things civil servants across different ministries do just to milk the system and get bribes while at their job.

They have showed him fire in his ministry cos he’s a devout Muslim who would not partake in any of their shady deals . He gets queried for the minutest of things by some of his corrupt superiors , even his contemporaries have called him mugu to his face for always wanting to act sanctimonious. I just shake my head anytime he relays such stories cos I know nothing will change . His contemporaries who are Level 9, level 10 now will also rise to level 17 sooner or later and such persons as directors or perm sec will definitely entrench corruption if they are already this corrupt in their formative years in the service .

A president cannot be telling us he has no concern for the exchange rate. Its a major concern because we currently are importing virtually everything

We cannot automatically transform overnight and start producing. There ought to be balances while the transition takes place

Dangote promised to finish his refinery years ago, and till now, na postponement upon postponement. Exchange rate is really affecting that project.

Tinubu misyarn for that one abeg
You saw Tinubu clearly responding to a question, but the question itself is edited out of the video.

Even as Tinubu speaks, you can see that the video is edited to cut him off literally mid sentence.

So it's impossible to establish the context in which he made those statements.

That being said, he said 2 things

1. Salary earner should not be bothered about exchange rate unless maybe they are an importer(we don't know the question he was responding to btw and the edit literally cuts him off mid sentence)

2. The falling naira indicates that Nigeria has to start producing locally to meet demand.

In case you haven't noticed, CBN has pivotedfrom previous policy of artificially propping up the Naira's value against the dollar at significant expense...in favour of largely letting market forces determine the value of the Naira.

In other words, if the Naira is worth having, it would be reflected in its value against the dollar. But it's not, so it's not.

Other than CBN throwing billions of dollars towards protecting the Naira again, The only way to make the Naira more attractive is to build the economy by ramping up local production

To me, that sounds awfully similar to what the BAT said.

We know that. I totally agree with that.

But a President saying he would be ignorant of the exchange rate (irrespective of whatever the question is) sounds funny.

Okay. If a Civil servant is paid in naira; 30k being the minimum, won't he spend it on items that are affected by the exchange rate?

Because you are paid in naira, and not an importer, doesn't negate the fact that the fall must affect you.

The point is A president (whether putting himself in a civil servant or importer shoes) shouldnt even have that thinking at all.

The exchange rate is a problem even for local production

This is the reason I never go collect my Masters degree certificate from one of the so-called prestigious Yunifasiti grin

After paying all the necessary fees online , Remita has sent receipt and my page on the school portal has been updated to show I’ve paid all fees; I still need to first go to the cash office in the school for them to stamp and sign the receipt I printed on the school portal….. It is only then I can proceed to the school of postgraduate to collect my certificate ….

Remita has obviously taken away the job of those men and women sitting at the cash office , but the powers that be will have them stay there and be doing nonsense while making me lose productive hours .

Lol...it's not that deep, Onyema is a product of the system, as we all are, I personally don't believe in paying taxes to the Nigerian government as constructed, and I avoid it unless impossible to...it's essentially paying taxes to the mafia. Nigerian civil service, how many work dey there really, we all know as e dey go there. I think the issue with Onyema's position is not realizing that systems like ours are not normal, and in truth, not one to take pleasure from. Responsible systems create responsible citizens and governments.
