Please I Need Career Advice! by Webhorizon: 2:47pm On Jul 30, 2022
Hello house, I'm seriously in a confused state right now.

I started designing website through wordpress since 4 years ago and I can say I'm good at it with zero knowledge of coding/programming.

I have successfully executed some freelance jobs both on fiverr and Nigeria jobs and I have my personal website that has most these works on it as my portfolio.

I was able to sponsor myself through a private university through this wordpress website design stuffs and I just graduated last month, please note that I have no knowledge of programming... I was only looking for a softskill to offer back then on fiverr and it happened to be a success.

Throughout this period, I had the plan to learn coding so as to at least be able to answer a web designer/developer but due to the fact that I was so busy with school work and all that, I can't combine schooling, working and learning programming all together because I had to hustle hard to pay these bills of a private university, so I planned learning programming after I sign out from school/NYSC period.

To cut the story short, I have a friend who traveled to the UK this year January and has a rich uncle in the UK, he went to the UK through masters and he's doing fine at least. This particular friend of mine does not know what web designing entails that all of them just know I'm a web designer, they can't differentiate between me and programmers that design website from scratch (Bootstrap, html, javascript, CSs and all programming language) now he told me his uncle is into IT and he told his uncle about me being a web designer, showed him my website and my past project and he asked me to send my CV and I'm sure he must have been thinking that I am a full stack web developer.

Now the problem is that I don't know what to do about sending my CV because I feel I can't just put wordpress web designer to my cv, that would limit my chances of getting anything.

Please I need advice from elders here, should I go ahead and send the CV like that? Or are there any IT skills I can learn to compliment my wordpress web design skill in a short time so as to make it look more sophisticated than just putting wordpress designer because I can't possibly start programming now because of this.. I am expected to send this CV by next weekend.

Your warfare started a long time ago. Probably you learn WordPress (CMS) to financially enable yourself for school. Your motives are wrong and are always wrong "I just finish from a private university", "The rich Uncle", "UK" I will advice u to close your eyes and start a very very very long journey of programming. You're asking for advice from programmers who have zero knowledge of What led to coding itself have you forgotten that inventions lead to mathematical theories that formed programming itself? From your write up, it obvious that you turn to whatever is needed per time. Send your CV ,make sure all the programming languages you are planning to learn are there. We've had people who will never make 10k in their life telling us to come for a seminar where they will teach ways to become a billionaire in two weeks. If that's possible, having head knowledge is one thing, having the practical knowledge is another. Hopefully, you will understand that all you want to learn is right in the WordPress you've been using.

Thanks for your input. Yes, the motive might be wrong and as a matter of fact, I've never thought a day would come in my life that web designing/programming would turn to be what is going to put food on my table, it all started like play and when I noticed the money was coming then from fiverr, I just decided to complete my education instead of having just Ordinary National Diploma, so I opted for a Bsc program, I chose a private university then because I really don't want to waste time (I'm 29 now) writing jamb/ASUU strike and all that.

To buttress this, my educational career is not in anyway related to programming/web designing until I noticed there might not be a way to survive after school than to build myself up as a full stack web developer and that prompted me to start thinking of going to learn programming after signing out of school.

I just see this as an opportunity and I don't want it to pass me by considering how the country is going at the moment and I'm sure you don't want to blame me for trying to utilize this opportunity for a better life.

I was going to japa through masters (UK) before but the money involved is way much and might take much time to gather as per fiverr is no more what it used to be.

I had wanted to send the CV and include all these programming skills, I planned learning (Bootstrap, html and javascript framework) at least for a start but I don't want a situation where I won't be able to defend what I included in my CV considering the fact that he (uncle) is serious about me sending my cv.

I just don't want to make mistakes. Thanks.

Should I include the programming languages I intend to learn in my cv? If yes, what do you think might be my faith if I was granted interview and questions are being asked about these things whereby I have zero/beginer understanding about these languages?

Please note, I'm not scared or desperate but I don't want to appear fake. I'm a fast learner too but I'm considering a situation where interview comes faster than I thought. Thanks.

Before wasting time, is there any guarantee that the uncle in question is willing to move you to UK if your CV can convince him that you can code?? Send me your CV is one thing, I need a web developer from anywhere and i can invite him over to the UK is another thing. So don't get too excited. Of course this is an opportunity for you, I also I agree.

If at all you're including any web skills
Make sure you include, Php, MySQL, JavaScript, Html, Css make sure you convince him of how you can script any document properly.

Now, what did you study? This will go along way in your speed to learning programing. If you can handle some Logic. I think you're good to go every programming language obey the same method of flow chart. From variables declarations and types, assigning their values appropriately to writing their logics and exceptions. You will only need to be worried about syntax and synmatics.

Nobody taught me coding although, I studied computer science like 10years ago. However, it will be a miracle for this to Man take you seriously if discovered your web skill is just CMS.

Including the skill sets in your CV is your personal decision, if you're willing to give it all it takes.. Goodluck from here.

Just like I said, I'm not overexcited about this but I just feel it's an opportunity but with the look of things, he's serious about it because we've once met in Nigeria one time like that.

My course of study is not in anyway related to this (international relations) so it's not going to be of any help.

I'm a fast learner and of course, I have resources and I think I can give it all it takes but what I intend doing right now is to start with these languages as soon as this night and I believe I learn fast too. It would be disapoiting if I just put CMS as my only web skill and that's what I'm trying to avoid.

Where do you stay? I can put you through but not free. However, if you already have an ICT Centre in mind, there's no point. I won't advice buying online courses or relying on YouTube YouTube tutorials you will only become half baked with that.

But I told him I am not a WP programmer( 'I dispised WP programmers then'), I am a hard coder, I taught i was saying something reasonable then... Na I miss a big chance to move forward in life.

I’m trying to get my head around your points here. You are discouraging someone from using a YouTube tut but encouraging someone to patronize your training (that hasn’t been proven)? Why?

my advice is this…

Send a very convincing CV, that shows you can code in html, css, JavaScript, php, sql… if he is going to bring you over it will take atleast 2months, if you are going to be working from here, you can team up with a good programmer and split the pay.

In two months, trust me you can learn html and JavaScript and even php, as long as you’re serious in it. If you are in Enugu, I can teach you html and JavaScript in two weeks and you can pay me later. Whatever you do, make sure you send a convincing CV, luckily enough, you have projects to back it up

Lol! Typical. Market your training fam. Those who are convinced about your service will purchase. But don’t pull down someone else’s offering because you want to market yours. And trust me, LikeAKing and I banter a lot on these NL streets. Correcting his grammar has absolutely nothing to do with tech. It’s a pastime of mine and I’m happy to banter with him on it.

Can we just be civilized for once?

You don't just come here and start insulting people for no justifiable reason. The person whose grammar he jokingly corrected even took it as a joke.

You're making fun of his career, but know this and know this well, it would take you 10 years of hard work to achieve what he has achieved in tech. What's your career projection in tech being like?

I saw the useless advice you're giving the guy, let him include JavaScript, Php, MySQL... what kind of tech professional will ask someone who haven't program to put these solid programming languages in his CV? Or do you think creating a tech CV and portfolio is just like your regular #15K salary CV?

You even went ahead to tell the guy not to use YouTube tutorials or buy courses! Instead let him come so that you'll put him through. This is the funniest and dumbest advice of the century.
And you claim yo be a computer science graduate. Mehn! that's sad.

Back to you @op... what exactly do you want from this UK man that you haven't gotten. If this story of yours is genuine, that you saw yourself through in school with your WordPress skills, what then will this man be able to give you that you haven't gotten?

If you will have to send your CV to him, come out plain with just the skills, show your work portfolio. It's as simple as that. If he has a job for you, fine. If he doesn't, fine. Spend the next 1 year of your life learning to code. Once you've learned to code, reach out to him. It won't be hard since you already have his contact, and have spoken with him in the past.

As simple as that.

I don't understand your question, you mean what will working in the UK as a web developer get me that I haven't gotten? Let me explain in case you don't understand.. Sponsoring myself through private university with this skill doesn't mean I was making alot of money, it was just what I wanted then, I had to hustle my way till I graduated.. I don't buy clothes, I don't spend unnecessarily, all my focus was just on that school and that was because fiverr as a freelance platform was paying well then unlike now that Indians has spoilt everything! Thank God I was able to save up till I finish school because I literally saw it coming that a day would come where this money won't be coming like this... As I'm telling you right now, to make $100 monthy on fiverr as a wordpress web designer, youll have to do extra, I mean extra and of course part of being extra is to use foreign account which sooner or later would get blocked after making few bucks.

The opportunities I'm seeing here is even way beyond what his uncle is going to offer me.. My problem is getting to pass the interview which would be online.. After that, I'll still have like 2-3 months to myself to go over these courses and considering my zeal towards having a better life, I believe I can at least learn something on these languages that I can offer then after getting there, I can improve myself over the year then probably start applying for jobs properly.

My plan before was to go through masters too but considering the financial involvement, it might not be possible, I just want to leverage on this opportunity to get there... There's always room for improvement and trust me, I can't be in a better environment and learn something for a year and won't be good at it.

I'm just going to take the risk of putting them on my CV then go hard in getting much knowlege as I can to be able to pass the interview then kick-start from there. I hope you understand me better now chief?
