Most times, four people are doing one person's job.

If the civil service is restructured, many of them would be jobless

You need to visit some ministries and see how they are idling away doing nothing
This is not true. Contrary to what you stated here, most departments are short staffed. For instance, most government hospitals and primary health care facilities rely on ad-hoc staff and IT students. The experienced staff are retiring and leaving with no one to carry on their legacy.

Hourly payment would definitely favour the FG.

I would advise the incoming president to adopt this quickly

Some civil servants get paid to peel the egusi they would use to cook their soup in the evening, just because they peeled it in the office

That's exactly the way most of 'em behave honestly. Another is threatening you with termination when you make a simple mistake.
They push you to a level at which you stop caring and you don't even mind what happens eventually.

Hourly Pay Vs Monthly Salary…

Would you like this payment method or you prefer the fixed monthly salary?

Cost of education will sky-rocket

Whether your wages are billed by the hour or not, the ultimate thing is regular paychecks. It does not matter if they come weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. It has to come when due

The person who posted this does not understand the meaning of pay per hour. Those who are engaged in this working arrangement are mostly students and the like. It is not tenured or permanent. Pay checks may come in every fortnight. The ''employee'' may be sacked at any time without notice. In Nigeria, we have pay by day/day pay. Hourly pay is not a job; it is merely transitory for job seekers, the unemployable and unemployed. Fits the schedule of Church's, Kentucky, Burger King, McDonald, Car wash, schools, but never any traditional public service that craves for tenure. Works fine in the US of A.

I very well understand the meaning of pay per hour. I understand its demerits and implications too. So if you took some time to read and check the opening post, you wouldn’t have missed this.

Now we have many Burger Kings and all in Nigeria being paid 15k a month. They consider this a job and get sacked anyhow. Why are they not being paid per hour. That is the question, Sir. Thank you.

But the paychecks are not even regular in Nigeria. These workers wait for months to get paid. So?

Na because credit system no work.
Before I say that this will definitely work in the private sector. As they have the equity to borrow from the banks and pay when due.
The issue here is also that some of the feeder companies they rely on for raw materials don’t have lines of credit and so if they are not paid upfront, they can’t deliver goods and services.

For the FG that owes money this will be a disaster . The FG doesn’t pay their debts on time which has a domino effect on the whole system. Since they can’t even pay in 30 days . Paying 2 in a month won’t work.
FG owes airlines millions of dollars , owes teachers ,’civil servants , owe companies who have honoured contracts who in turn owe people . Fix the FG and many more companies might entertain this system.

I once contacted someone to run a check on our website. Fix some bugs and all. In my mind, I’ll dash him 5k when he is done.

This young man told me he would do it at $15/hr. I had to back-step.

I loved that he placed value on his time.

Would you call this person unskilled? cheesy

You are wise!!! I had a boss that kept threatening me way back. He would tell me to divide my salary by 21 working days and ask myself if I deserve it. Lol. That was a good question. But thinking of it now, if I divide that salary by 10hrs, it was nothing. Yet we thought we were enjoying. grin
Lol... your boss would have felt he was doing you a favour by employing you, that was why he made that statement.

Imagine being a civil servant for over 35 years, and you can't even boast of a depleted bungalow in your village upon retirement, cos the system has been programmed to oppress the poor and favour the ruling class.

This is why I'm strongly against salary jobs in Nigeria today. Reason being that most of them are just slavery.... do you know that a standard bar/club owner earns far higher than a bank manager and the latter would always respond to him as sir whenever he calls him for transactions. Why because the former controls how he's money comes, he's not under the constant whip of a taskmaster disguising as an employer, so he's bound to succeed.

Perhaps you're not residing in naija where employers would not pay their workers for 6 months and still be threatening them with "no work no pay nonsense".

You dey find hourly pay for a 3rd word country?

You should be talking of employing people directly, instead of contract.

But we all can’t be self-employed na.

I get your point though. Many organizations would pay you low because they think you are not doing anything. Oya, make it hourly pay, so that I can be jumping here and there - they won’t.

I was having this discussion with my friend the other day and he made mention of pension. How much is the pension? Same pension that they don’t pay? Some of our hardworking civil servant parents are still very reliant on us.

Hourly pay means you get paid for when you are actually working . It's not funny at all.
I once taught a 1 hour class but finished teaching the syllabus content in 40 minutes and left the class after giving them assignment. When payday came, the company paid me for 40 minutes ! grin grin

Calculate that for over a month.

Meanwhile, employers who pay per hour monitor to see that you are actually working, no loafing around or wasting time. That is why they pay high rates per hour.

Lol...they won't make it hourly because they want to keep using their staffs.

Hourly pay would mean if you have an engagement say by 3pm, you can resume work by 8am and sign out by 1pm, having ample time to prepare for your engagement. If your employer wants to keep you back due to the magnitude of workload they're experiencing, he would have to respectfully seek your permission to tarry with them. And this would definitely mean additional working hours which mathematically translates to additional pay for you. So it's a win win situation if you choose to stay. Hourly pay would mean you can manage 3 different jobs and still be effective in 3 of them, because you'll know how to manage your time effectively. But today's employer would keep staffs in the office from morning till 7pm and sometimes force them to work on weekends and still pay them peanuts even though the agreement was 4pm. Then expect them to come and thank him after receiving their pay, (like the thread that was on the home page few days ago) that's slavery.

Pension kwa...do you know that some civil servants monthly pension is as little as 15k. You'll see them under the sun in government house standing for hours for their documents to be approved so that they can rush to the bank to collect 15k, then the following month they'll be back to resume the same process. Isn't that slavery? Heaven knows I would never tolerate seeing my aged parents queuing up for such nonsense.

Great, then I like it.

I once worked at an org where salaries were paid twice a month to curb the excessive begging and incessant complaints of some staff about being broke.

For example if you earned 120k, you would get 40% of that on the 14th and 60% at month end, on the 28th or so. I thought it was cool because it kept me liquid and you know middle of the month na when salary earners dey broke pass.

Yet, we still had people burning through cash and complaining before the month ends.

Sorry to sound like a killjoy about your tax-free "enjoyment", but what your Company is doing is tax evasion and they will pay it all back if they are audited by this revenue-aggressive administration.

Your initial 50% is supposed to be taxed as it is not exempt. But your company is smart to exclude it from the pension calculation base in order to reduce the amount of their financial contribution to your old age by half. So they are actually doing themselves a favour reducing their cost of keeping you in employment while you also get to chop part of your old age money now, making it look like a win-win.

Smart management grin
Yeah. You are right. We are a firm of Chartered Accountants. I have tried to opt in for the normal way, but the company's policy won't change because of one person.
I would rather the big tax now and enjoy the benefits later.
