The Nigerian Bar Association says two of the four leading candidates in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential elections have confirmed their availability to speak at the forthcoming Annual General Conference of the Association (NBA) in Lagos this month.

The 2022 NBA Annual General Conference, with the theme “Bold Transitions”, will hold at the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos from the August 19 to 26.

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart, the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, who have both confirmed their availability will be speaking in a panel session on the topic “Democratic Transitions in 21st Century Nigeria: 2023 and Beyond”.


A press release by the NBA’s Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP), also said invites had been sent out to the other two candidates, Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), but they were yet to confirm their availability.

The TCCP said the Presidential Candidates’ session will come after the conference opening ceremony and will afford participants a rare opportunity to interact with the presidential candidates just six months ahead of Nigeria’s general elections next year.

“We are excited to announce that of the four leading presidential candidates we sent invites to, two have confirmed to us that they would be available to speak at the 62nd NBA Annual General Conference holding at the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos. We await a response from the other two and we are hopeful that it would be positive,”.

Why is Tinubu afraid of debating?

I'll be looking forward to Peter Obi's viewpoints and how the learned audience will react to it during the interactive session.

To be honest, Atiku is still sound and can make intelligent arguments - we saw a lot of that some four years ago during the Candidate.

As for Jagaban, that one na confam dundee na. A man who should be resting is busy sharing looted money in order to buy the presidency. I hope he will attend the program and tell us how to use agbado to feed 50 million youths in the military.

When an elder refuses to respect himself, he shouldn't accuse young people of being disrespectful.

This is event is taking place in Tinubu's state, why is he avoiding public speaking and appearance?

The last public speaking Tinubu did we end up with the agbado mantra. His handlers are wise to shield him from public scrutiny.

Tinubu can't move around on his own. Six to seven men must surround him to prop him to walk and stand for even 10mins. You won't want him to be at this gathering if you were his handler.

You obviously don't know Asiwaju Tinubu. He is so much very focused that he gets his priorities right.

It is an NBA conference and not a debate ground. Even the NBA prioritizes its outlined conference events like election of officials more than the politicians priorities.

Even HE Atiku may not show up perhaps except to block HE Wike.

Over 99% of the registered voters won't attend the nba conference and if he speaks there, it won't still get to about 90% of the registered voters.

So if you are Asiwaju Tinubu, will you consider it a low priority task or high priority task?

The media wants to sell newspaper while the social media warriors need entertainment to jest on. The priorities of both the media and social media jesters can wait when you have an election where 90% of registered voters in swing states are not on the social media or read newspaper or watch Tv.
