I think your last sentence gets to the bottom of the issue: it wasn't fear that held them back, it was racist indifference. There's a reason why Italy's next government is likely to be led by extreme right-wing nationalist parties - fear and loathing of Africans coming over the Mediterranean in boats. To such people, the murderer probably seemed like a hero.

You're correct! I have always felt these boat people would lead to an extreme contempt of black Africans by the Italians. However, It seems the deluge of new arrivals seems to have ceased.

If the Brits could vote for Brexit in anger due to the massive influx of white Central Europeans seeking a better life into the UK, this shouldn't be a surprise.

Worse, the Africans landing in Italy aren't the well educated lot. I won't be surprised if a good number are school dropouts. Their actions would further dent Italians poor perception of Africans.
