People buy such art work and donate them to musiums and get tax deductions ..

Or they just buy them in cash from artists and later on get their money back ..ie money laundering schemes

Sometimes, i dont understand why people spend millions of $ on just rough drawings.

Lol....most are used for money laundering on a lowkey....let's say I have $200m to launder... I can easily call my art dealer/critique friend and have him appraise a piece of art for $200m....I set up a Phantom Auction and buy it for $200m....after I pay the money the auction company receives it and wires $180m to a secret account to eliminate all traces to me while keeping their own share

Thank you for this educative piece.

Asides the gigayacht, for me every other piece there seem far too overpriced
Not Liz Taylor's jewels. That would always appreciate in value and diamonds are indestructible from elements.
A yacht is still mechanical, like a car and would not appreciate in value as soon as it clears the dock. Instead, it drains your funds even if u turn it to an economic good - exclusive charters etc. It has a lifespan.

Precious stones, the older they get, the more they appreciate in value.

Giacometti’s Pointing Man - $141.3 million (₦60.2B)

“Pointing Man” or “L’homme au doigt”, a life-sized sculpture of a thin man pointing in typical Giacometti style was sold $141 million at Christie’s auction in New York in 2017.

The same auction where Pablo Picasso's art Les Femmes d'Alger was sold.

The sculpture created by the Swiss artist in just one night.
60 billion naira for a skeletal man pointing to God knows what? This is ridiculous

Does this mean no artwork or iconic items ever cost that much? If it is a moneylaundering scheme, why e never cast?

Stop converting to that useless currency called naira .
If any of my earned money stays in naira ,for up to 24 hours, I will begin to panic, I immediately convert all my earned naira to stocks and other dollar asset classes
