Umahi: Government Will Not Borrow N1.1 Trillion To Meet ASUU’s Demand by Warlord12(m): 7:35am On Aug 11, 2022
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State, yesterday, said even though the demand by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) is genuine, there is no way the country will borrow N1.1 trillion to meet the union’s demand.

Umahi, in a statement, when he received members of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, led by Mr. Ben Akubueze, insisted that the basic problem in the country remains security, health and education.

According to Umahi, a university education is not for everybody. He stressed that the basic education every country strives to attain is secondary and vocational school education. He maintained that these are basic schools and that qualifications obtained from them can aid one to start up something or gain employment.

His words: “There is a need to review our educational system; it mustn’t be for everybody. I am not ashamed that I have a first degree and my deputy is a PhD holder; it doesn’t matter. So, I cannot see how we cannot sit down with ASUU leaders and iron out the strike problem.

“I have read on the social media and newspapers how students got into trouble just by sitting at home or engaged in other means of keeping themselves busy instead of being in school.

“There is no way the country will borrow N1.1 trillion to meet ASUU’s demand; it’s unreasonable. Are the demands genuine? Yes, but we can start little by little.

“There must be a commitment from both parties. ASUU members are not making demands to take to their houses so to say; they are asking for better infrastructure, as well as better lecturers and students. Yes, but we can start with a fraction of that and then have a programme that will run on the platform of sincerity to address all demands.

“Let me also say that most of the time, our people have a low appetite for maintenance of public works.”

No matter how much you deploy to these universities, unless the users, the industry, the regulators begin to treat public infrastructure as their own, it will continue to go bad no matter how much Federal Government deploys to it.”

But the government borrows trillions and we never see what they are meant for.

They even gift neighbouring counties.

How can you have family problems and go out helping other families with their problem?

Abi has Satan finally relocated to Nigeria?

but multiple billions are spent on primaries and unproductive ventures as well as mismanagement of billions by public office holders, APC is indeed the worst thing to have happened to Nigeria.

sad The 1.4B gift to Niger Republic and monies stolen by the NNPC, Accountant-General and other high profile crooks under this wicked govt should have helped out to some extent.

One can never join the coven of wicked broom wielding witches and wizards then be expected to think straight. This is what that has happened to Dave Umahi.

Most of those castigating Umahi up there did not even read the write up.

Both ASUU and federal government should find a lasting solution to this incessant strike.
If government can meet more than half of what the striking lecturers are demanding, I think the strike will be called off.

The hardest job right now in Nigeria is defending APC. It will make a professor look as if he or she didn't pass through primary school.

But you can borrow money to buy cars for Nigeriens because your cousins are there, you can print money to enjoy yourselves! Your wasteful spending is one reason ASUU is going all out! You keep flaunting "wealth" before impoverished Nigerians, yet you claim there is no money undecided

"According to Umahi, a university education is not for everybody."

Just imagine the mindset of a so called 'political leader' who expects to tell a nation of gifted people who the best person to rule them is! Education is a right and not a privilege as John Dewey once stated in “Thinking in Education”. A student willing to learn will most likely think incongruously than others who are not willing to learn. But this is the issue with being ruled by quota system products! The right of an education is often viewed as an obligation and will be frequently taken for granted. On the other hand, the privilege of an education creates a burdensome fee for many poor families, causing a rise of many illiterates. Who in turn will mindlessly follow the piper like Hamelin rats to a destructive future! They can’t borrow to prepare the nation for a better tomorrow, but they can borrow that same amount to purchase luxury high end SUVs for another nation that did not beg them! What a generation of myopic leaders!! angry

But they can borrow money to be relooted by their cronies and even send some of those borrowed funds to their sister country Niger?

APC and everything it's made up of are extremely confused. The foolish Umahi even said university education is not meant for everyone

It's obvious that we have an incompetent president who cannot think of how to explore and harness new revenue sources. I think what's best for the country now, if we are honest with ourselves, is for the federal government to partially remove the PMS subsidy. That will help this government to offset some of its outstanding debts.

I don't know who advised Buhari to borrow money and fix our railways when we have more critical sector like power to invest in. We were doing fine without them before now. That's why Peter Obi keeps screaming borrowing for production, not consumption. Imagine how much this country will be making and its impact on our GDP when we start generating and distributing over 10kMW of electricity.

Fools capitalising on 1.1Trillion trying to confuse the masses. The deal is not for 1.1T at a time but to release a total of that amount in 5 years. Fools twisting the story.

So basically, what ASUU demands for the revitalisation of universities is about N220B per year for five years. 200B per year shouldn't be too hard for any reasonable government.

Ok.....But my useless government can spend $2,000,0000,000 billion on a rail line to Niger Republic.

A project that contributes little or nothing to the economy of Nigeria.

Few days ago, the world most useless and dangerous party APC led government, spent over N1,400,000,000 billion on cars, which was gifted to the same Niger Republic.

How did we arrive to this?

You people should just follow the agreement and stop twisting words to confuse peoplegrin

They tried to drag their parents in but failed. The parents got wind of the stupid game they tried to play and shot it down before it took wings.

Fix education. It is a human capital project for the citizens, unlike the 2022 executive jeeps being gifted to Niger elites to chase armed robbers along our borders undecided
