After "settling" they'd let off the hook. Is it today the illegal bunkering started allegedly perpetuated by the high and connected in the Nigerian space?

So an unauthorised super tanker that was not cleared to be in the area somehow found it's way to Akpo field. An OIL TANKER.

The navy and NNPC just. . . Let it? When oil theft is on the all time high?

Didn't the navy mark zero cases of piracy for the first time in 30 years a few days back? How then was the oil tanker able to gain access UNHINDERED?

Thank God for Equatorial Guinea, at least we get to hear of it before it's pushed under the rug.

This country is truly on autopilot.
.... Have you seen pirates operate 300+ meters long oil tankers before Oga piracy is different from illegal crude lifting.... Know the difference and know peace.... You can't know the authorization status of a tanker until it enters into your waters.... The Nigerian navy have done no wrong here at all and instead of looking for faults, u should applaud them for getting this right...... And u are applauding Guinea?? If Nigerian naval forces didn't sound an alarm, the Guineans will allow the tanker pass through their waters just like every other sea vessel..... U leave your own go dey applaud another man own..... So much for a patriotic citizen!!

If you investigate thoroughly, that ship is owned by a Nigerian, probably from the Niger Delta.

Massive oil theft is a commonplace in that region. And when you catch them, they will tell you it is their oil and use the youths against you grin

I think the better questions go be say:
(1) who get akpo field?
(2) who hire the tanker?
(3) who load the tanker?

Orobo no get just drive enter akpo to carry crude. Na big men runs wey cast be this. And no be today them don dey thieve the crude... na them them... ITT

A powerful African or two may fall for this. This was how I read somewhere that Murtala Muhammed was assassinated two days after denying a U.S. government jet entry into Nigerian airspace.

Imagine how much of this has been going on over the years. Citizens of developed cuntries come in here and do as they please, breaking all known laws we have with impunity, due to the corruption of the officials we have manning our posts, and a government that has failed in just about all objectives for which it exists.

That's the irony. They can't steal same in their country but had to come all the way down to to because we have security and government officials that aid and abet these acts of sabotage.

It is very saddening indeed.

[quote author=nairalee post=115872650]If you understand the enormity of this crime you'll conclude that Nigeria is finished

It takes highest Level of impunity and crookedness to execute this kind of large scale theft. And this would have gone undetected as usual if not for foreign intervention.

Nigeria is an active crime scene

Global epicentre for crime and corruption

Being in the vicinity of the oil field is undoubtedly questionable. But how did the crew of the vessel intend to load the precious cargo without the cooperation of the personnel running the field and the cooperation of security?

The fact is that this vessel was summoned to Nigeria by one of the ogas at the top to help lift oil that was going to be stolen and sold at a discount on the international market. This is what Nigeria is known for. I work in the industry.

No other country does this. We are a shame to the black race.

This is untrue, an investigation should be made to unravel all those who are involved especially with their states of origin.

True, oil theft is different from piracy, but the Nigerian navy ddnt do their jobs properly.
The report said that the said ship was almost docking to lift crude, this is far into Nigerian territorial waters. Secondly, how can a large crude vessel out run a naval ship ?? This is the question i need an answer to. How ??
Assuming this was a war ship, wetin we for dey talk now sef

Just the scapegoat they decided to show us(Theatrics!!)

Installing a system that ensures a ship to ping the server that they're in our waters will solve all this nonsense(if they want to be serious). Technology!
It's not rocket science oh.

The same people that arrested a ship in the past with 2 million barrel of illegal crude oil.

When the case was being investigated, the 2million barrel disappeared and what was left was water.

How did the ship enter our water way without the Navy’s knowledge?

To rent a VLCC is not cheap na, the fact still remains they are willing collaborators... the vessel won't load if they are no crude oil available ...

How come such a large ship passes via thier perimeter unnoticed, loaded crude & left, even a fast moving frigate cannot outran it,that tiny equitorial guinea navy has to help us arrest it.all because they refused to settle.may be the naval charge is more than d nnpc charge.

Baba read !

It did not arrive in Nigeria's oil Field, it retreated and ran away empty, that's why it was able to go fast.

And it's as simple as ABC Nigerian ship cannot pursue it ones it crosses Nigeria Sea space it had to take the diplomatic route

Everyday for the theif, one day for the hunter

Incase you are wondering, a large vessel like this cannot steal without knowledge of the field operators.

Total abi Mobil?
How many times have they been fined for illegal crude export? Its like this time they did not Roger the Rogers.

Your president is busy blaming crude oil theft for failure to review civil servants pay, and you think how the navy arrested a ship for lack of "clearance papers" is a story worth reading? I hope you get to read more about crude oil theft by top officials.

Please, learn to ask questions when confused and stop misleading the public with your myopic view. This vessel was NEVER cleared and that was why a Navy Ship GONGOLA interrogated the vessel for their surreptitious activities on our water.

And when they could not give a sufficient response and knowing that they might have been caught, the rogue vessel raise a false alarm of been attacked by Pirates and this was equally countered by Nig Navy.

Due to existing synergy between Nig Navy and Equitorial Guinea the stealing vessel was hunted down and it will soon be handed over to Nigeria for prosecution.
