The mistake Putin made in the early days of the war was not going all out to overthrow the Zelensky government and capture Kiev. That should have been the focus from day one, and all the troops and equipment devoted to that. By allowing the Zelensky guy to stay in power, he was able to rally both domestic and international support now Russia is bogged down with no honorable face saving exit options left.

It wasn't a mistake. He did try to capture Kyiv in the first few days, but the Russian soldiers were repelled by Ukraine forces.
