Jonathan succeeded his boss with two years to go. He had an agreement to let go of power after four years which was why the northerners supported him as well in 2011. Because if not for the death of his boss, the PDP candidate would have been a northerner still.

These were some of the reasons some of his northern political associates like the formal PDP national chairman and others worked against him in 2015 despite being members of the same party.
