I’ll just make it brief, I was in my early 20’s, my friends talked me into the journey but I didn’t know they were not travelling with us until the day we left Nigeria.

I didn’t have much information about the journey but because they told me it’s easy and fun I left Nigeria with them.

We were first held by rebels in the desert for 28 days, mind you I left Nigeria Feb 3rd 2009 and I got to Libya in March.

The owner of the uncomplicated building we were living brought the police to arrest us 4 days after I got to the house, some guys were arrested but i and some other guys escaped, we ran into the cemetery and slept there till 6AM.

I found a Nigerian who offered to allow me stay in his house, few days later I told him that I got a connection to cross to Italy and I will be living the following day.

The following morning this guy left the house and locked everyone inside, he returned in the evening with 3 guys, a Ghanian and 2 Nigerians. The moment he entered the house he pointed at me saying this is the boy before I knew what was happening they stated beating me asking me to follow them. I resisted and fought back, the landlord heard the noice, he came knocking so the guys quickly ran away.

The following morning this guy asked me to pay him $300 before he will allow me leave, I said you should have said that instead of bringing people to beat me up. Then I gave him the money and left his house to the camp from where we were to be taken to the sea side.

The same night we were taken to the sea side, when we got there we were ask to sit on the floor and not make noice, about 3 minutes later a small balloon boat came and was taking us 30/30 to the big boat, I was on the 3rd batch, few minutes after I entered the big boat, we saw boats coming towards our direction behold they were coast patrol.

The person that was to sail our boat told everyone that we will all die instead of him to allow the police arrest him then he zoomed off, the police chased our boat till they caught us when we were almost out of Libya territory.

We were arrested and taken to prison on Sunday and we broke the prison on Tuesday and escaped. We were chased all night……. Na long story bro I hope I get to document all that happened on that trip one day. I lost my left eye as a result of the beating I got from the guys that were invited to beat me.
you must be rich right now o.

It is a very dangerous journey, it takes 3 days to cross the sahara desert and the vehicle usually move's only at night. The desert is infested with Tuareg robbers, boarder petrol, rebels, and soldiers, who extort money from the passengers and rape the female passengers.

If the vehicle becomes faulty in the desert then there is trouble as they would only by 10% chances of survival. once there is no more water, travellers are forced to drink their own urine just to stay hydrated and survive the brutal conditions of the desert.

If the travellers manage to make it out the desert alive they are forced into connection houses, beaten extorted and forced to call their family back in Nigeria to pay ransom.

Crossing the Mediterranean sea with a makeshift boat could be a brave or stupid decision, so many Nigerians have died in an attempt to cross the sea, some of these people have never journeyed through a sea in their life before.

If you are a Nigerian reading this and you are planning to make this journey please go to YouTube and watch sea storm and see what it could do to a ship not to talk more of a makeshift boat, I woudn't even advice my worst enemy to attempt that kind of journey.

One thing I've come to learn on Nairaland over time is there are folks who will be realistic with their comments, folks who wouldn't mind speaking the truth unlike the majority who are always affected by herd mentality, and whenever you find such, you need not stretch your guts to know that this comments is trustworthy.

I always tip my hat to those folks, may sensibility and the peace of heaven never eludes them.

Taking this kind of risk just to relocate to Italy that is almost the same with Nigeria?

Italy is economically dead just like most EU countries. There is no job in Italy, social welfare for even citizens is near zero. Training kids in Italy is insanely costly compared to Ireland or even UK.

Many Nigerians living in Italy are living in worst condition than those living in Ajegunle, so why take such risk for such a glorified European slum? angry

I blame APC and Buhari.

If they had put in sincere efforts to at least make Nigeria livable by running an inclusive and proactive government that doesnt discriminate, youths won't be taking this kind of risk cry

Before you decide to migrate to any country from Nigeria as a Nigerian, check around your community or environment, how many Nigerians living in that country are doing well financially? Also check how many that are excelling doing legitimate work or job?

Some countries don't deserve the risk.

I know Nigeria isn't working currently but its not as bad as taking the risk to migrate to some countries where you will face harsher conditions of survival.

Trust me dear young Nigerians, if you take away pride, shyness and all that and fold your sleeves and put in more effort by doing some legitimate odd jobs or rendering legitimate odd services in Nigeria that many of our people do when they travel abroad, you will never beg for food and with time, God of multiplication and labor will visit you and reward your hardwork.

The only aspect I condemn Buhari and APC completely is in the area of widespread insecurity that have made Nigeria an unsafe country for her citizens. You can't travel freely within Nigeria and yet we have a President, we have Police, Army, Civil Defense, etc, its so shameful. Give Nigerians complete security and allow them hustle their way out of life till fortune smiles on them someday not allowing useless gunmen and idiots to be kidnapping, killing and slaughtering citizens at will without any instant consequences to discourage others from joining such brutal trend angry

I sympathize with you, but these are some of the reasons Nigeria has a bad name tag.... we all complain about Nigeria, but who is Nigeria if not us and the habits we exhibit?...

The part of your story the marveled me was that a fellow Nigerian betrayed you. It's really sad. Truth be told, if I see another Nigerian outside the shores of Nigeria, my very first reaction would be mistrust cos we Nigerians are capable of anything. If we can be wicked to ourselves in Nigeria, then you can only imagine what we can do to ourselves outside of Nigeria. Dont get me wrong, am not saying that there are still no kind hearted Nigerians out there, am just saying what my initial reaction would be if I encounter another Nigerian in another country. All the same, am thankful for you that you survived such ordeal and that you are good now.

Your story is really touching. I have heard & read of similar tragic stories such as this that elicit sympathy.

I keep saying it, all the stupid people shouting “Japa out of Nigeria, Japa to Abroad at all cost” on Nairaland front page are stupid, senseless, vacuous secondary school children who have never left their parent’s house for a day and who do not understand how the world works.

Personally, I cannot count the number of acquaintances that I know since 1999 till date who have died untimely in their stupid quest to “Japa out of Nigeria” for greener pastures.

I am not mocking anybody. It’s just that I am allergic to stupidity.

You do not have any relative abroad who can take care of you. You do not have enough money to sustain you abroad. You do not have any connections abroad but you want to Japa at all cost because you think Nigeria is worse than every other Country on Earth.

Well, by the time you Japa into your grave, you will receive that sense that have eluded you since birth - by force.

Continue taking & following the advice of some stupid illiterates on the internet.
Na funds and opportunities make u feel say japa na death s3ntence.

When you go to the whiteman land, then you will know that Nigeria is a hell hole and there is heaven on this earth!
