Oga Ndi Oga, Peter Obi And The Anambra Secret Underworld by DikeDiMighty(op): 6:07pm On Sep 03, 2022
Those keenly aware of the sociopolitical set-up in Anambra State can attest to it’s many idiosyncrasies. On the surface, the state appears to be a vast bustling megapolis, accommodating a variety of business hubs and a number of economic nerve centres. From the boisterous streets of Onitsha, to the industrious factories of Nnewi, a town fondly dubbed the ‘Japan of Africa’ by particularly optimistic economists, and believed to be a paradise of billionaires by the locals. Anambra State seem to portray the very entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbos.

However, one thing that may not be immediately obvious to the cursory dilettante, are the deep dark secrets and cabalistic oligocracy that props up the otherwise innocuous but thriving State, and therein lies our story.

I happened to serve in Anambra State as a youth corp member in 2019. I was posted to Nnewi South, Ezinifite precisely, and while I was not particularly impressed by the location I found myself — a ramshackle village at the very edge of civilization, with a fast encroaching rainforest, bordering neighboring Imo State— the promise of a monthly stipend from the State government and prevailing laxity of NYSC regulations, as the area was far away from any principal authority figure, pacified me enough to stay.

Now, one thing about Anambra State is that it is run unofficially by a gaggle of billionaires who control the various communities and local governments, very much like local lords ruling over fiefdoms. They basically dictate the politics and social narratives of their ‘territories’. It didn’t take long to find out the ruling caste of the place I was posted to, the town and adjoining villages of Awor Ezinifite has two prominent lords; Leo Ike Okoye(Uduako mmiri) and Godwin Agbasimelo(Oga Ndi Oga). It was during this period that I got to know Oga Ndi Oga, his underground Nigeria-Ethiopia-Brazil drug smuggling corridor, his links to violent mafia groups, most notably, the and his dealings with top politicians in the state, including our now newly minted saint, Peter Obi.

Early February 2019 was a period of tension and hysteria in Nigeria, occasioned by months of heated political campaigns and the fast approaching elections. Peter Obi was contesting as Vice President to Atiku Abubakar under Peoples’ Democratic Party(PDP) at the time. Corp members from the community were invited by Oga Ndi Oga for a meet-and-greet, and naturally, I attended along with my colleagues. We had barely spent a couple of months in the town and were largely ignorant of a lot of things about our new posting.

On getting to Oga Ndi Oga’s family house, we had to navigate a mammoth crowd of townfolks who had besieged the entrance, and on enquiry, we were told that the man was sharing money to his people. This came as a surprise to most of us who had never heard of anyone sharing money to people for no apparent reason.

‘‘Chief’’, as Godwin Agbasimelo is widely called by the locals, later received us in his compound, a vast edifice cluttered with exotic cars and abandoned tents. A convoy of SUVs were sitting with revving engines at one corner of the compound and security agents could be seen parading the place with stoic faces and military urgency. We soon found out that our host was just emerging from a meeting with the infamous Chris Uba. Those who are familiar with Anambra State will know the Uba brothers, Chris and Andy, and their notorious exploits, most prominent of which is the July 10, 2003 incident when, with the express permission of the Obasanjo government, the then Governor Chris Ngige was abducted from the government house and kept in a secret bunker in Awka for over 12 hours while security operatives posted to the government house stood by without raising a finger, working on express orders from Abuja. Prior to that period, the Uba brothers, along with Emeka Offor, had wrecked such havoc on the state, that Anambra became ungovernable. But that is a story for another day.

We all watched as Chris Ubah scuttled in haste into his convoy and zoomed off. One can only guess what business could have brought a renown drug baron and mafia lord and a politician of such disrepute together.

That was my first witness of the seedy dealings between the political class and the underworld in Anambra state. About a week after that day, the small town was agog with news of Peter Obi’s visit with ‘‘Chief’’.

Who is this Godwin Agbasimelo? Why do most of Anambra’s bigwigs seem to turn his residence into a political mecca every election season? A backgrounded story on the man will reveal more context.

Prior to 2010, Godwin was not known as philanthropist or ‘big man’. Rather, earliest accounts by local residents generally agreed that this overnight billionaire had been a political thug and hired assassin for politicians within Anambra State, and it wasn’t a particularly closely guarded secret. Further investigation into his background revealed a sordid tale of a wayward second son of a ‘native doctor’ who rose to prominence from a street urchin to gang leader to a renown hitman to political butcher cum mysterious billionaire.

Indeed, as the account went, his reputation as a top ‘Capon’ of the militia lended him the reach to perpetrate all manner of nefarious activities within the State. Godwin later entered into the drugs and arms trafficking trade, running the Brazil-Nigeria corridor as a prominent merchant of the illicit trade. Infact, most people in Ezinifite will tell you that until early 2014, Oga Ndi Oga was largely faceless. His sudden ascension to limelight as a multi-billionaire ‘philanthropist’, without any known source of where the funds for his philanthropy comes from, except for an amateur football club that barely featured in any local league, was a source of public astonishment.

Now, one would wonder, what does this story about Godwin Agbasimelo have to do with Peter Obi? Well, apart from the fact that the notorious ‘Chief’ appears to be a close confidante to Peter Obi, he is also a prominent member of the Labour Party in Anambra State. It is interesting to note that Godwin’s brother, Obiora, contested for governor of Anambra State in the November 6, 2021 elections under Labour Party. Very recently, the Oga Ndi Oga ‘‘sociocultural movement ’’ endorsed Peter Obi and pledged to do everything possible to win him the Presidency. One can only imagine what support from such quarters would entail. But one thing is certain; it all smacks of the age-long collusion between unscrupulous elements of the underworld and the political elites of Anambra State.

While many may find it difficult to swallow, it isn’t farfetched, and it is very much verifiable.

While Peter Obi is mostly seen as a devout Catholic and a harmless underdog, with populist ideals and a messiah complex, further examination unravels a man with more complex inclinations and motivations.

One is his marriage to Margaret Usen, the daughter of popular Olumba Olumba Obu, founder of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Stars, a personalized cult of delusions formed in the early 1900s, which according to former Special Adviser on Interparty Matters to the ‘Okwute’, Ben Obi, the Anambra State government donated generously to during Peter Obi’s tenure as governor. Another is his indictment in the Pandora Papers, where it was revealed that Peter Obi owned various offshore accounts and shell companies he used in laundering money and evading taxes. Companies which he failed to declare in his asset declaration form on running for office. The story about Peter Obi’s financial infidelity while handling the treasury of Anambra State as governor will be discussed extensive in another piece.

Indeed, a little cursory examination of his antecedence has shown Peter Obi to be a man with penchant for misinformation. Claiming that his son, Gregory Obi, who resides in the UK, doesn’t own a car, when in fact, young Obi owns a BMW X6 2017 model. Or that he — Peter Obi — only owns one watch when he has been pictured wearing a number of watches. These may appear on the surface to be little misdemeanors, barely worthy of note, but these are only few amongst his many other notable faux pas. It all casts a lot of aspersions on his integrity, enough for discerning people to understand that this may be another case of a sugar-tongued politician deceiving a people desperate for change. For a man from the Anambra stock of politics, emotional manipulation is the least dangerous weapon in his arsenal.
