Someone did us dirty some years ago..

I've had some funny experiences with recruiters in the past. Let me share one now and I'll share the other some other time..

Immediately after MBA, we were job searching. There was one guy who was working in one reputable organization and needed to revamp his CV for an international application for himself. He hadn't applied for a job in a long time and wasn't sure of the latest way of writing his CV.

Do you know what he did?

He advertised that he was recruiting for a position and that people should apply. A lot of people applied including yours truly (me), he got a lot of CVs, went through and revamped his CV with the ones he liked and did his application..

We didn't hear from him. We sent reminder emails, no response and we moved on. It was later one of his colleagues we were friendly with blew the lid and told us there was no opening, that he was just looking for the latest CV to rejig his own with.

Dishonest, isn't it?

People can exploit the vulnerability of other people's situations for their selfish benefit.

After that experience, I stuck to 3 rules:

1. If the recruiter's email address is not linked to an organization and is a free one (eg. @yahoo, gmail, etc.), I do not bother.

2. Request for the Job Description (JD). Such hurriedly made-up jobs may not have any JD.

3. Do not include personal identifying information in your CV. You can just include your name, mobile number and email address. Take out age, home address, etc. Be security conscious.

Your CV might end up anywhere ~ in a dustbin, with a Suya or Akara seller. Protect yourself by limiting the personal identifying information you put in there!

Be discerning as you go about your job search so you're not exploited or you don't give away your personal information to dubious individuals. Desperation will kick in at some point, try to keep your emotions under check.

I share real-life stories to motivate, inspire and encourage you. Share my posts and follow me for more relatable content.

I have been interviewing candidates quite a lot recently.

And, while it may appear to be an unpopular viewpoint, people do not brag enough.

Interviews should be used to brag about being the star of your own movie.

Go all out and brag about all your excellent accomplishments. This is not the time to be modest. If you do not have any, it is time to get some.

It is not just about your qualifications and the work you have done—it is about being able to talk about yourself and what makes YOU unique.

Who else is going to sell you if you cannot sell yourself?

This is not the time to discuss your team members. They are not conducting an interview with you. Instead of "we," use a lot of "I."

So, consider this advice: when you are interviewing with a company as a job prospect, make sure that EVERY word you say is relevant, effective, and memorable.

How I lost a job opportunity to a lesser qualified candidate.

This happened about 4yrs ago and became the foundation of everything I have achieved so far. Bringing this back to our timelines because I know someone out there may be a victim.

We had applied for the same social media design jobs together with 28 others and only 5 were shortlisted including I. It was a physical interview and we had gone to the company’s office as early as 7am to await our final interview.

Bisola was so warm. We engaged in a quiet chit-chat as we waited to be called.

“You already have the job. you have really cool designs. I can't do all these. Maybe I would come for tutorials after this interview “

She commended after going through the designs I had in my phone gallery.

I blushed and assured her that I was cool with that.
My confidence level went from 2 to 600% instantly.

A few hours later, the interview came to a blissful end. I exchanged contacts with Bisola and we parted ways.

1 week later, Bisola called to tell me that she got the job. I was so happy for her. I knew I would be called soon as well because I am a better designer. So, if Bisola could get the job, then my grand welcome was already waiting for me.

Days turned to weeks and weeks to months and I never got a call. I lost hope and tried to forget about it.

One day, Bisola called to tell me how she over heard one of the hiring managers telling a staff how a certain lady who was shortlisted about 2 months ago would have gotten the job but he felt that she wasn't organized enough because of her poor portfolio and social media profile.

I immediately compared my Instagram profile with hers as well as my online portfolio and one thing was glaring. Bisola wasn't the perfect designer but she positioned herself as an authority on her social media profile. Her bio was straight to the point and catchy and she backed them up with her works.

My own profile was scanty and not even convincing enough. In fact with the way it was, it was easy to assume I didn't create those designs myself & I kept wondering how I was shortlisted in the first place.

That was how my personal branding journey began. People buy you first before they buy what you're selling.

Taking the time to get your personal branding right will increase your sales and build customer loyalty in years to come. It is your chance to help your audience really get to know you – and make a lasting positive impression.

Dealing with failures and setbacks at work?

How do we recover when our projects fail? When performance appraisals come short of expectations. Or when we make a significant blunder which is reflecting negatively on our competence or character?

There is a certain level of trepidation that comes with failure of any kind, more so within the professional environment. However, these days are expected and will certainly come. Especially as we grow and develop our competencies. Many innovations and creative ideas are borne out of a series of missteps both controlled and accidental. So, it doesn’t have to be a ship sinker!

That said, when it does happen, it leaves some residue of self-doubt, overthinking and sometimes regret for us to deal with. In a very competitive environment, our performance becomes a piece of our essence, so we believe we should be infinitely infallible. But experience connotes otherwise, what is most critical is how we deal with those failures and the learning we carry forward from them.

So how do we respond to failure?

Firstly, own up to the situation, and resist the urge to be defensive or make excuses. Do more listening than talking. Be sure what exactly went wrong and the part you have played in it. One of the best opportunities to spot potential leaders is how they handle their mistakes. Someone might be watching with keen interest! What were the contributing factors and how has our decision-making become flawed? When we are able to figure out what went wrong, we gain much more insight on how we can either prevent such or make better choices not only for ourselves but so others are not as blindsided as we were.

Also, it is important that we carefully assess the impact of whatever mistake or error is. On others, our colleagues, and the organization. Have I triggered something? Is another team having to work extra to clean up the mess? How has the failure of the project impacted our budget negatively? Addressing such situations without understanding the scope of the impact can further worsen it.

When we fail, it might be the cue that we need to speak with a coach/mentor. When we feel most vulnerable, the wisdom of a mentor might come in handy. Someone who has walked the path before and knows exactly how we feel and is likely to have the right words or perspective for the situation. The goal is to be back on track and be better. The recovery is much smoother when can get a little informed encouragement. Clarity is often impossible without an external hand shining the light of wisdom into our murky state!

More importantly, we need not be drowned in self-pity or hide away after a “bubu”. At best, get a note and a pen and list the learnings. Seek out ways in which to do much better. Life is full of lessons disguised as wrong turns.

Having a flat on the highway doesn’t have to end the journey!

LETTER TO EMPLOYERS, TEAM LEADS AND MANAGERS
Dear Leads and management,
I hope this letter finds you well. It is my sincere desire that I get your attention with this letter and that you will put my concerns into consideration.

It is difficult for team members to have work-life balance when the team leads, and management do not seek to achieve balance in their own lives. When this is the case, management accepts ridiculous timelines from customers and clients and this cascades to unrealistic expectation from us which in turn shatters the plans, baby steps and progress that we may be making in trying to achieve balance in our life.

Please note that the other things we do outside work is what fuels and sponsor our productivity and enthusiasm which translate to excellent performance at work. If you take our other lives and our weekends from us, we will gradually become disgruntled and lose our passion for the job. At the start of our career, our level of need might be survival and being able to pay our bills however, where we are now, what we want is just peace of mind and a better life. Allow me to bring to your attention that most of the time, professionals resign for peace of mind.

I don't know how to bring this letter to an end but I really hope and pray for your kind considerations going forward.

Best Regards,
RJ
For: the ever working professionals in different industries and companies.

''Whatever your hands find doing, do it with all your might...''

Don't assume that this would mean deploying utmost physical strength to get a task done, No

Rather it suggests the collaboration and commitment of the hands, mind and heart in getting a Job done.

It's not enough to use your hands to get the Job done, are you engaging your mind to create better methods of delivering the Job more effectively? (deploying planning, technical know how and proven methods).

Are you working with your heart to maintain a cheerful and love-filled attitude while delivering an excellent Job?

Listen, you are needed, you are significant, you are not trash just waiting to be disposed

You a valuable part of a complex system, that would be incomplete without you. As in the words of Martin Luther King Jr.

“No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

So once again, ......do it with all your might.

How is the independence celebration getting along?
