IamAtikulate: The Oyo empire should be fall in that bracket too. Then there’s the Kanem-Bornu empire to the Northeast. |

OkCornel:Oyo was never an empire. It's a myth created by Yoruba history to measure up to Bini Empire. Oyo was a kingdom under the Alafin. An empire is a kingdom that rules over other independent kingdoms. Name the independent kingdoms that we're subject to Oyo. Kanem-Bornu and the Caliphate are the two empires in the North, though the Caliphate doesn't officially recognize itself as such. So, pre-colonial Nigeria only had two empires, 1 quasi-empire and lots of kingdoms which Oyo was part of. |

IamAtikulate: I see… Would be interesting to research on the empires and great kingdoms nonetheless. Thanks for the clarification. |
