Pour oil in a pot with tight cover that is not perforated. Put on the heat in low flame for 20 minutes. Put off the heat. Wait for 20 minutes afterwards before opening the pot. No choking, no smell.

But if you don't have the time, pour palm oil in a dry pan on heat and heat up for about five minutes before adding in things.
Be very close and observant to avoid fire outbreak, there will be a strong smell in the air too.

The first option is always better.
