Okealaaye:
It's futile trying to alter history when the participants in the events are yet alive. The Igbo brought the consequences of their actions and deeds upon themselves. The coup of January 15th 1966 was an Igbo coup against the constitutional government of Nigeria, pure and simple! Witness the fact that no Igboman was killed in the coup, while they decapitated the elites if the other Regions. It's the same way the Peter Obi quest for President is today being camouflage as a national youths project. An Igboman became head of state. He was urged to bring the coupists to book so as to assuage the feelings of the northerners who had their leading lights murdered by the coupists, but he refused! Later, he abolished the 1963 constitutional order, upon which our federalism was based and instead, he enacted the Unification Decree 34 of 1966 and created a SINGLE civil service for the whole country. The situation was becoming unbearable, leading to the reprisal killings of the Igbo in northern Nigeria and the counter coup of July 1966, and subsequently, the civil war. Before the January 1966 coup, Nigeria's intergroup relations was mostly peaceful. So the Igbo had it coming. Playing the victim now is out of it, and whatever the versions of the history of Nigeria of those turbulent days that were told the Igbo children in their little huts back home cannot stand in the face of reasonable appreciation of true history. Thus, in vain shall the Igbo await any apology, any reparations and any remorse from their hurting compatriots.

Thank you for your analysis.

You have repeated this Igbo coup so much that it is beginning to look like the truth, and aided with your devious removal of history to challenge such lies. Because nzeogwu was the leader made it an Igbo coup?? What about Brig. Ademulegun?? What about Brig. Maimalari? These were nzeogwu’s right hand men who carried out the coups and actively pulled the triggers, BUT no! You all now made it look like nzeogwu was at different places at the same time shooting people?

Grandmeister:

Your opinion is yours and you are very well entitled to them. Back then Nigeria was still in the full grips of the British government. America wouldn’t have done zilch if the British didn’t sanction it then. Gowon and ojukwu were less than 33 years old when that war started, gowon wasn’t even married then, most of the top military guys were either newly married or single at that age so it is understandable, the ego and lack of diplomacy they possessed for men their age. Nobody is excusing them but that war could have been averted if the British government stayed out of it. An agreement was reached at Aburi for goodness sake! Only to be thwarted by the behest of the British government.

the Aburi accord happened after the killing of leaders from other regions by Ojukwu, Ironsi, Nzeogwu and his gang and Gowon is from a minority tribe in the north while the leaders the Igbos killed were from majority tribes so it was out of Gowon's hands or the major tribes would have killed him and put their own people and the war would have still happened without Gowon...

The war could have been averted if the Igbos did try to colonize Nigeria by killing other tribes and seizing their lands and removing regionalism..

Ironsi was in the west and ojukwu was in the east. They can’t take orders from nzeogwu because he was a junior officer to them. You are actually super stupid. And you reason like a shit eating slowpoke.

Is she angry at Nigerians, just imagine the daft questions you are asking, when a woman explained herself to pieces.

As for me I am happy at Nigerians for constantly denying burying distorting twisting and falsifying historical certainties. I am happy for having people who do not understand the plan and torture our parents and grandparents went through make statement like this. " Awolowo should have sacrificed more of those bastard kwashiokor babies" those mockeries are even being made on these threads. Those are hate speeches those things are being mad eon twitter do you know you cannot say such stuff about the RWANDAN GENOCIDE or the Holocaust.

So you are telling me that this woman shouldn't be angry. There is no human being with a heart who has watched or followed the civil war and documentaries and has not been reduced to tears. It is only you devilish children of hate and Genocide who have the spirits of AWOLOWO and Ahmadu Bello inside of you who express emotions differently (on favour of the (GENOCIDERS) Keep deceiving your useless self.

We are talking about GENOCIDE, STARVATION, WAR CRIMES you go go dey here dey talk rubbish, person dey traumatized, una go still dey ask useless questions. There's no point trying to explain anything to you. For the fact you fit dey dismiss that tangible explanation that women gave shows you are as useless and stupid as the rest of the idiots in this forum if not more.

Children of the devil and Genocide.
like I told gidgiddy.

for you and people like you, you prefer the killing of millions of Binis, Yorubas and other tribes in Nigeria than to say and accept that Ojukwu and Azikwe were wrong to start a war by killing other tribes and seizing their lands...

what food did the families of Ojukwu, Ironsi, Azikwe and Nzeogwu eat while other igbos were starving to death

If the Ojukwu, Ironsi and Nzeogwu war was successful it means millions of southern tribes would have killed and this would have led to retaliation by these tribes and the killing of Ojukwu, Ironsi and Nzeogwu which would have also led to another more bloody war on Igbos all over Nigeria and southern Nigeria and it will be a lot more than 3 million igbos killed...

Its not possible for Ironsi to have abolished Regionalism, all 4 Regions were still existing the day Ironsi died, with full resource control

The person who abolished Regionalism was Gowon, who came after Uronsi died, and used decree 14 to abolish all 4 Regions, created 12 new stated and scrapped resource control

The ammunition from Britain and other countries were bought by Nigeria.

You might want to revisit your Nigerian history. The killing of Igbos started as far back 1945 when they were massacred in Jos, and in 1953 when they were massacred in Kano. But the only coup you Nigerians remember is the first coup that was tagged "Igbo coup". Other coups that claimed far more lives dont bother you people

The Regional government where every Region controlled their resources and paid the government at the centre was removed by Gowon. It was Gowon that used Decree 14 to abolish all 4 Regions of the time, replaced them with 12 states, and scrapped resource control. No military government writes constitution, they rule by decree

It was the Biafra/Nigeria war, Ojukwu was entitled to invade Benin, Ore or anywhere in Nigeria same as Nigeria invaded Enugu and Onitsha

If anyone was killed in Benin, their relatives are free to do what Uju Anya did on Tweeter, she is not stopping them.

Ojukwu never declared any war, Gowon was the one who declared war and sent Soldiers to the East. Ojukwu only wanted to go his way with his people. At least Ojukwu fought for the freedom of his people before running away. You people cant fight for even 3 minutes to even talk about getting to the stage of running away

You should be thanking them for calling Nigeria a zoo. Nigeria is poverty capital of the world and second most terrorised country on earth, much worse than a zoo

The British colonial masters left us with a perfect system of government (REGIONAL GORNMENT) where every region controlled her resources and pay tax to the central government. The Igbo tribe because of their greediness and selfish interest for power so as to dominate other tribes in Nigeria stage the followings:

1- First military coup where all Nigerian leaders from other tribes were killed except their own.

2- Destroyed regional gorvenment and introduced UNITARY GORVENMENT through a dubious constitution that was quickly drafted by Professor Nwabueze which is seen in the picture being pushed by Peterrorist Obi Pandora.

3- invaded Benin city, killed a lot of people so as to dominate them.

4- Ojukwu went as far as Ore in present day Ondo state, is Ore part of Biafra land? Abi na Queen Elizabeth tell the fool to invade Ore?

5- Declared war on Nigeria, a war he wasn't prepared for which led to the killing of his kisnmen after running on exile to Ivory Coast.

6- Killed Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello, Okotie Eboh, Akintola and still went to the Kano state in the heartbeat of the city boasting of how they killed northern leaders which led to the pogrom in the north.

Today the idiots are playing the victims card after calling the country zoo.

all this evil was started by Igbo so why all this sudden cry from our dear biafrans imagine no single Igbo man was killed in the first coup d'état while many hausas and yorubas were killed with out showing mercy but now when the both tribe do the needful you idiotic tribe started crying and behaving like a coward so to all igbos if any one should be in pain that will definitely be una son ojukwu who started the war.

Nothing was started by Igbo, another one of your propaganda. You know your history to which I can never purport to debate it with you . But just so you can know we are not GASLIGHTED. There were both Hausas and Yorubas who took part in that coup as well. IGBOS foiled the same stupid coup you are talking about. Aguiyi Ironsi who has been described as gallant and very patriotic, surrounded himself with a lot of Hausas and Yorubas (Contrary to your propaganda). Aguiyi was going to execute the remaining members of the coup, but had just taken power while everything was still shaky and tension was everywhere. The south west was in a lot of political turmoil and so was the north. He wanted to douse the tensions before going on to do the needful with the coup plotters. He was of course conspired against by his own inferiors (same people he surrounded himself with) in the army and murdered. They basically decided the IGBO cup was full. (A lot of history there) Aguiyi was one of the best Nigerians ever. The intention to wipe out the IGBOS forever started the war, the coup was just their cover for their evil mission.

The Hausas had always hated the mostly christian easterners who were the most educated, industrious, hardworking and skilled people a situation that even after the war persists till date. Yorubas shared similar sentiments although theirs was born out of more sinister hate and envy, extreme JEALOUSY.

Anybody mentioning anything about what led to the GENOCIDE of IGBOS the only thing that led to the GENOCIDE of IGBOS was the HATRED OF THE IGBO SUCCESS. This was born out of extreme envy, jealousy, and ill heartedness by their fellows, the Igbos ran the Nigerians Economy by then the rest of the regions have always been very backward and conservative. Igbos engaged education more than everyone in this country they were a million light-years ahead of the North and definitely a few hundred years ahead of the west. There is no justification for the GENOCIDE, If they really SOUGHT revenge the revenge was the counter coup which saw over 300 top ranking IGBO OFFICERS massacred wasn't this enough revenge for the SARDAUNA and his counterparts in a coup that wasn't an "Igbo coup" as it is excused.

Of course not this revenge wasnt enough, riots sponsored by the state saw police, civilians, gathered in a regimented fashion and with great unity of purpose, Igbos were being systematically burnt killed dragged out of their homes murdered pregnant women bring butchered in half. People were dragged out of their beds at night burnt to death.... etc (POGROMS)

This left thousands dead, the survivors went back to the Eastern regions in their millions as refugees, these people were being slaughtered because of a coup that wasn't even as IGBO COUP ( As the propaganda holds). These same survivors were sent back to their various regions by OJUKWU, who had been involved in a number of meetings with GOWON and the Federal govt. Asking them to stop and prevent those who are responsible for inciting these riots, he even submitted names of some People who were known to have started the riots in view of their prosecution. He left Dodan barracks with the promise that The refugees are free to return to their homes with the protection of the military Government. This prompted OJUKWU who was already being urged to seperate the country to protect his people, to turn deaf ears and insist that the survivors of the riots return to their regions. He assured them that the Riots will not happen again, that it has been quelled, and that the Federal govt was in total control and would investigate the previous POGROMS to bring the incitors to book. OJUKWU basically pushed this millions of folks back into another fresh round of massacres, of course the govt didn't livee up to anything they were strategically complicit in the MASSACRES in the North and western Regions.(POGROMS). How can you stop why you started much like today.

With Thousands more dead the refugees again returned back to the Eastern regions with the whole world watching the FG was silent, just watching, much like today, TEACHERS PROFESSORS, TRADERS CIVIL SERVICE WORKERS, RAILEAY OFFICIALS..etc..were basically marked and massacred along with their families. My family has its own story.

OJUKWU sat down evaluated his options called the FG for their aid and Help and to reason with him they GOVT didn't even send any single representative to the Eastern regions to meet with the GOV General. It was the same region where there were refugees, where thousands of their population down North and west were massacred were the same people GOING to Dodan barracks to seek the ears and empathy and understand why the FG was not doing anything but aiding the GENOCIDE of IGBOS in the North and Western Regions.

After careful deliberation and consultations OJUKWU was basically forced, in all human accesssment, in all objectivity, nothing wey my guy no try do to prevent the war, he reached out, he plead with them to stop the killing, hella my guy sacrificed his People twice reintegrae back assuring them that Nigeria is their homeland only for them to be slaughtered afresh. From the start he ignores all the calls for seperation. It was at the very dying minute when it became obviously clear that the GOWON Government was waving a war of POGROMS on the Igbos and wasn't interested in securing or stopping the MASSACRES against her that OJUKWU had to do something.

The last straw that proved the Nigerian govt really had an evil Agenda against the IGBOS was the creation of the 12 states basically the de regionalization of Nigeria by Gowon, Gowon who had learnt well from his colonial masters proved that they really wanted to kill off the OGBO race because, he quickly did his Divide and rule tactics, because they were expecting BIAFRA to seperate this proves the point that they indeed were behind these massacred and didn't give a Bleep. They seperated this regions in case whenever the Igbos got tired of the killings and decide to seperate themselves they will not leave with the SS who were basically under the eastern region. Of course this was because of the oil in the deduct eastern region.

As Ojukwu saw this and after all consultations my above points were proved and OJUKWU then seperated, Proclaiming the sovereign state of BIAFRA. Even amongst Igbos of course we don't worship any man, but people argue differently on the things OJUKWU would have done differently during the war to have maybe prevented a lot of things that happened his declaring of BIAFRA is not amongst such discussions every student of history knows that OJUKWU was blameless when it comes to the war and was basically pushed to the very last all to prevent the extermination of his people's a General would not stand by and basically watch his tribes men eliminated from the face of the earth with our doing anything about it. History is kind to him in that regard.

Today the idiots are playing the victims card after calling the country zoo.
well you guys can repeat that lie as many times as you like that Ironsi was the one who abolished Regionalism

But unfortunately for you guys, Gowons Decree 14 that abolished all 4 Regions, created 12 new States to replace them, and scrapped resource control, can be found on the internet

These are part of the reasons they removed history from schools. To perpetuate lies like this until it started sounding like the truth.

Ironsi created the unification Decree 34 of 1966 and created a SINGLE civil service for the whole country..

regionalism is about each region keeping its revenue and been able to make decisions to develop their infrastructure without interference from the FG......

the unification decree meant that each region no longer keeps its revenue and now needs permission from FG before they can develop their infrastructure and that only the FG can hire people into each regions public institutions.

creation of states doesn't remove the laws and guidelines that make regionalism...

If states in Nigeria start receiving 90% - 97% of their revenue from the federal institutions in their states then that means we are practicing regionalism...

What Queen Elizabeth II’s Death Exposes About Biafra

First published in my column, #TheAlternative, in today’s ThisDay.

When on Thursday, September 8, 2022, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II passed on into ancestor-hood, I was not particularly moved. I like England. I schooled and worked there and those years were some of the best of my life. The English people are by far some of the most decent peoples on planet Earth.

However, I am rather indifferent about their monarch. I did not like or dislike Queen Elizabeth II. The only thing I can think of that I admire in her is her stoicism. Her ability to take pain and pleasure with equanimity. She is the epitome of duty and a stiff upper lip.

But I doubt that I bothered much about her and her goings on. I was just aloof.

So, while I was not one of those mourning, it was not because I had some grudge against the House of Windsor. No. It is just that the House of Ginuwa (the first Olu of Warri), mattered more to me than Buckingham Palace.

The above not withstanding, I was absolutely mortified by the hideous and historically inaccurate things that were said about the Queen and her family by a Nigerian woman living in America, whose name I will not dignify by mentioning.

I later got to find out that this woman has other issues, which made me understand her bitterness better, though I still vehemently reject her indecorous words.

She was one of the people who famously celebrated the death of TB Joshua and called him all sorts of unprintable names when he died. So it is no big surprise that she has turned her vitriol in the direction of the late Queen.

And so now, let me tackle what the death of Queen Elizabeth II reveals about Biafra. It shows us as a people not aware of our history, and because we are not aware of our own history, we have distorted it, such that propaganda and pseudo history has been orally passed down from one generation to the other, feeding unfounded bitterness that is destroying those who harbour it, and having no effect on those against whom they are embittered.

That is why some people believe they were just sitting down minding their business and Hausa people came to fight them (all Northerners are Hausa to some people) because they hate them. There was absolutely no provocation, or igniting events that preceded the Nigerian Civil War. Hausa people just woke up on the wrong side of the bed and for some strange reason decided to pounce on the people of Eastern Nigeria.

But of course, that is not what happened. However, because we do not write our history, and even worse, we have refused to teach it in our schools, there are millions of people who believe this version of events. In fact, they swear by it.

One fellow named Uche Nnaya even tweeted at me that the Igbos of Southeast Nigeria had a right to rail against the British monarch and the rest of Nigeria, because “you can’t push people to the wall and dictate how they react.”

Really? But do those who hold such views not know that some other persons were FIRST pushed to the wall? Uche’s response will also justify how those who were first pushed to the wall reacted.

We cannot keep holding grudges as if other people do not have their own grudges that they have let go for the peace and unity of this country called Nigeria.

My great uncle, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, was shot and killed in the street by Major Chris Anuforo on January 15, 1966. Ironically, I went to school with Anuforo’s son. Should my people carry that grudge forever?

Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was shot on the street like a common criminal by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. Ifeajuna tried to deny it, and claimed that Alhaji Balewa died from an asthma attack, until his body was taken to LUTH and examined by the then minister for health, Dr. Moses Majekodunmi. It was established that the body was riddled with bullets in a front page story in Daily Times, written by Segun Osoba, who later became the Governor of Ogun. He is still alive.

This was an incorruptible gentleman. He lived a very ascetic life. Materialism was FAR from him. He was an author. His book, Shaihu Umar, was the first novel written in Hausa. He surrounded himself with Southerners (in hindsight, was that a mistake?). His best friend was Matthew Mbu. Should the Tafawa-Balewa family and the people of Bauchi, where he was from, hold a grudge forever?

I could go on and on and list the people killed on January 15, 1966, and the identities of their killers, but that would just be reopening old wounds. These are historical facts, which some people deny and pretend as if the Civil War happened in a vacuum.

So, please let us stop pretending as if the late Queen Elizabeth II came to Nigeria and ignited a war. The Nigerian Civil War was ignited by a series of unfortunate events that began with the cold blooded murder of 22 people from the Northern, Western, and Mid Western regions by people of mostly Eastern region origin, which led to a counter coup by Northern Nigerian military officers on July 29, 1966, and the unfortunate pogrom of 66-67.

Many people now spewing vitriol against the late Queen Elizabeth II for her alleged role in the Nigerian Civil War conveniently forget that between August 9, 1967 and September 20, 1967, Biafran forces invaded and occupied the Midwest region, and named Albert Nwazu Okonkwo, as military Governor of the Midwest. A number of non Igbo speaking Mid-Westerners lost their lives during the Biafran occupation of the Midwest.

After the Midwest was liberated by forces led by colonels Murtala Muhammed and Benjamin Adekunle, more Mid-Westerners, this time those linguistically linked to the Igbo (especially in the Asaba axis), were killed. Please research it before you insult me.

I need to add that the killings by the liberating forces were worse than the killings of the Biafrans, and should truly have been declared war crimes.

Yet, in that same Midwest, we accepted Nigerians of Southeast origin back after the war. We did not seize their properties in the abandoned property saga that occurred in the Port Harcourt area and its environs. We let bygones be bygones.

The truth of the matter is that If the January 15, 1966 coup had never happened, it is most unlikely that the Nigerian Civil War would have occurred. The perpetrators of that coup opened a Pandora’s Box that the rest of Nigeria are still suffering from today!

There was wild jubilation all over Nigeria after that coup, because Nigerians believed it was a patriotic and nationalistic coup. Then the names of those killed were announced over the radio, and it was discovered that only people from the North, West and Midwest were killed, but NOBODY from the East was killed, whereas the vast majority of those who carried out the coup were from the East.

That is the remote cause of the Nigerian Civil War. We will remember it. We will also teach it to our children, so that it does not reoccur.

So, to just keep nursing grudges and reopening old wounds will do no one any good. You can bully others into submission, but you cannot do it to Reno Omokri. I know history and I am a meticulous record keeper!

It is only those who are ignorant about how the British government works that will blame the late Queen for the actions of the British government. She was a titular and ceremonial head of state, whose actions were limited to appointing the candidate who has won election directly or indirectly as prime minister, and declaring open the parliament. She was a symbol. She was not the initiator of the policies of the British government.

And even the British government are not to blame for the Nigerian Civil War. We must learn to take responsibility for our own actions. That war was the result of the ill advised January 15, 1966 coup.

The coup itself was led by Majors Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and Ifeajuna. It was executed by the following persons:

1. Kaduna Nzeogwu
2. Emmanuel Ifeajuna
3. Timothy Onwuatuegwu
4. Adewale Ademoyega
5. Chris Anuforo
6. Humphrey Chukwuka
7. Donatus Okafor

Of these seven people, only one, Adewale Ademoyega, was non Igbo. The rest were all Igbo, although Major Nzeogwu was what was referred to at that time as Midwest Igbo (later colloquially referred to as Bendel Igbo and now as Delta Igbo). Major Donatus Okafor’s mother was Tiv. However, his father was Igbo.

Incidentally, some Igbos unwisely try to deny that Nzeogwu was Igbo, and call him ‘your South-South’ brother. Unknown to them, the more they do this, the more they make non Igbos feel that those specific Igbos who say that have learned very little since the civil war.

22 people were killed during the coup, including

1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa
2. Ahmadu Bello
3. Ahmed Ben Musa
4. Hafsatu Bello
5. Ahmed Pategi
6. Samuel Ladoke Akintola
7. Festus Okotie-Eboh
8. Brig. Samuel Ademulegun
9. Brig. Zakariya Maimalari
10. Col. Ralph Shodeinde
11. Col. Kur Mohammed
12. Lt. Col. Abogo Largema
13. Lt. Col. James Pam
14. Lt. Col. Arthur Unegbe
15. Sergeant Daramola Oyegoke
16. Mrs Latifat Ademulegun
17. Zarumi Sardauna
18. PC Yohana Garkawa
19. Lance Corporal Musa Nimzo
20. PC Akpan Anduka
21. PC Hagai Lai
22. Philip Lewande

As is clear from the list above, none of them were from the then Eastern Nigeria. . (I have since learned that Lt. Col. Arthur Unegbe was Igbo. He was in charge of weaponry in Lagos, and was killed when he refused to cooperate with Major Chris Anuforo).

After the coup, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi took over. Rightly, or wrongly, the rest of the nation felt that a coup carried out by overwhelmingly Eastern officers, and of which the victims were entirely non Easterners, and which supplanted a Northern minority leader (Tafawa-Balewa), with an Igbo leader, (Aguiyi-Ironsi) was a set up.

However, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s promise to try the coup plotters placated the rest of the country. Sadly, the plotters were jailed, but were never tried. And the immediate cause of the July 29, 1966 counter coup was when rumours circulated that the coup plotters had been receiving full salaries in jail and were to be promoted.

These are facts that we all should address, rather than blaming the late Queen Elizabeth II for a war she did not cause, nor had anyway of stopping. And if we do not learn from our history, there is every possibility that another war might erupt in Nigeria.

The Biafrans inflicted a very harsh occupation on present day Rivers, Cross Rivers and Akwa-Ibom, as well as present day Delta and Edo before they were flushed out by federal forces. The Bayelsa area escaped the brunt of Biafran occupation due to the fight back from Isaac Adaka Boro. They invaded Ore and hundreds of soldiers and civilians died. There is still a Yoruba proverb about the amount of people that died in Ore. Ask a Yoruba person to tell you the meaning of ‘o le ku ija Ore.

We have all forgiven and moved on. Yet, you want to reopen these old wounds and make them cancerous by blaming Queen Elizabeth II 50 years after the war?

And when you point this out, the very same people castigating the late Queen will accuse you of creating ethnic tension? Do you want to be victims and victors at the same time? Leave the woman and her family to grieve in peace. By celebrating the Queen’s death, you are giving Nigeria a very nasty reputation that will affect all of us and not only you. We cannot afford to be seen as a nation with anti British and American sentiments, when we are not able to get a better deal from China and Russia.
