Thankfully it didn't take off because this would have been disastrous. I am not saying he didn't try, but he should have added safety mechanisms to protect his life. Imagine if that thing had taken off, how will he land it?

Anyway, he tried. He needs to fine tune his design. You don't need to get it right at first attempt. The required features of the end product is progressively elaborated to meet satisfaction. That's the act of engineering.

You won't unerstand his reason for testing the helicopter except you're a creative person. There is nothing as tasking as creating something; sleepless nights, discarding what you built and starting over, even one small mistake can spoil everything.
