I noticed that most Nigerians feel so much achievement upon having a family member outside the country. I have seen Nigerians proudly declare the following (just an example tough) :

1. My uncle in Canada

2. My Aunty in UK

3. My Brother in the US

4. My son in Germany

5. My cousin in South Africa

6. My husband is in the United Arab Emirates

7. My daughter in Italy

8. My brother in Malaysia

9. My nephew in India

10. My brother sister uncle daughter son in Kuwait
Etc.
I observe a pride in each of these people, and I realized that it doesn't even matter which country the family resides in, for the homers, they always feel like they won a noble prize by having a family abroad.
Some of these people have families in Indonesia, Malaysia, Israel, Libya, Kuwait, Honduras, Greece etc. And they puff with pride as if it's a life worth achievement.
Others have families in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, South Africa, Australia etc, which is still note worthy.

But the Question is; why do most Nigerians count having a family abroad as a big achievement, and even make mockery of their fellow Nigerians who do not have a family member abroad. Or those who refuse to mention that they have families abroad?

Is it a Nigerian thing to behave like that, or is it a global thing, do other countries nationals behave like that?

Your opinion is the back bone of this thread. Thank you.
That is for people from "humble background" ie poor families. So when they have a person that gets out of the country to the "abroad", it is seen as a huge progress and way out of poverty for the family.

OP is just jealous!

It is just a way of identifying someone when speaking or talking about something; do you expect the person to say "my stick in USA " or "my flower in Japan"?

Your assertion does not make sense.

GROW UP & FOCUS ON LIFE

Lol! Jealous, if you noticed the Houston in my moniker then you did. But I won't boast of that person in Houston, Texas. Let it remain so.

I think it's a black man phenomenon. This mental enslavement goes back to the colonial era where our ancestors sold our "ancestors" for a bottle of coke and a mirror! This generation isn't an exception, u can see how musicians, celebrities from Africa celebrate Gucci, Fendi, Armani etc to African fabrics. We need a total overhaul of our mentality.

Exactly! Can't you see them invading our thread? Pushing false allegations on me, that I'm jealous. Lol! Jealous indeed.

When they say 'My brother is in Aba', you wouldn't reason it.

But when they replace Aba with Canada, you start feeling somehow.

My brother, you are the problem, not them.

Change your mindset.
I love you for this

Its a southern Nigerian thing. People in the village pride themselves in having relatives in Lagos, port harcourt, asaba, Abuja etc. most Nigerians see whites as superior hence the phenomenon. If you have worked with whites in Nigeria, they get special treatment and privileges. Also many believe having a relative abroad will make it easy for them to also travel which is usually not the case. Naso he be
What is this reasoning? Nigeria is grossly underdeveloped and most people take pride in the fact that they have relations abroad as a way of saying "in a way, I have rich family members abroad". It has nothing to do with skin colour, whites or blacks. Travelling abroad for Nigerians is like the highest prayer points answered.

If the Nigerian system was working, it wouldn't matter if your relations were in Mars or Pluto.

It’s a social status thing.
It used to be those in the village would say their son was in the big cities, Lagos , Ibadan or Kano.
When people migrated to cities, saying I have someone in those cities no longer has that same impetus . So those same people say lagbaja is in Us or Canada.
I have however noticed that people in public service and private service see it differently.
Those in public see it as an accomplishment , a sense of pride whilst those in private see it as a byword.

Lol! Thank you for your opinion, but that's not the case, I'm talking of the pride that comes with it, and the inferiority complex that is bestowed upon those who don't have families abroad, or those who refuse to mention having families abroad. At least, nobody sees you less for not having a family in Aba, so it's no mindset. I have families abroad, but I never mentioned it, or look less on others who did not. And I never feel proud. I hope you can understand now. Thank you.
People are free to talk about what gives them joy, your perspective is the wrong thing man.

You're the one viewing it negatively.

I am sure if you have a relative abroad who is doing well, people close to you would know how proud you are of them.

how many northerners are japainghuh Just few. They even have boko haram and banditry to use for asylum yet they no dey travel abroad . Thats why i said it’s mostly south, some northerns are proud too of their relatives in arabic countries.
I remembered a story from one of my friend in the North...
He travelled abroad for a one month holiday...
He came back the third day from the holiday...
Embassy called him to ask for reason for coming back so early...
He told them he could not cope with the cold weather...
Some of the lecturers that taught me in BUK
completed their PHD abroad.
Most of them are back home teaching in Naija...
They simply prefer to stay in their community...

That's you, not everyone will be like you and that doesn't make you better than them. We express ourselves differently.

Don't be too confident in your ways and think others doing things differently are being proud...

to Some its boasting,to some it's not boast but people just felt jealous or intimidated by others' accomplishments. it's not like it's an achievement, but it means someone over there could send some hard currency back home and really make things easier for them here ! so its not about boasting but thanking God for someone that can be a bread winner
