I noticed that most Nigerians feel so much achievement upon having a family member outside the country. I have seen Nigerians proudly declare the following (just an example tough) :

1. My uncle in Canada

2. My Aunty in UK

3. My Brother in the US

4. My son in Germany

5. My cousin in South Africa

6. My husband is in the United Arab Emirates

7. My daughter in Italy

8. My brother in Malaysia

9. My nephew in India

10. My brother sister uncle daughter son in Kuwait
Etc.
I observe a pride in each of these people, and I realized that it doesn't even matter which country the family resides in, for the homers, they always feel like they won a noble prize by having a family abroad.
Some of these people have families in Indonesia, Malaysia, Israel, Libya, Kuwait, Honduras, Greece etc. And they puff with pride as if it's a life worth achievement.
Others have families in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, South Africa, Australia etc, which is still note worthy.

But the Question is; why do most Nigerians count having a family abroad as a big achievement, and even make mockery of their fellow Nigerians who do not have a family member abroad. Or those who refuse to mention that they have families abroad?

Is it a Nigerian thing to behave like that, or is it a global thing, do other countries nationals behave like that?

Your opinion is the back bone of this thread. Thank you.
the same way buhari and dabiri beg abroad people to invest in nigeria

U must have had conversations with many many people who made reference to relatives in local places…. ‘Like one of my uncle in the village ehn’….. but u won’t reason it
Once u hear someone mentions a relative overseas, U unsecured mind, ur inferior conscience would remind u that u don’t have person in abroad and would tag it pride

Oga, you need to work on yourself… you’re the problem

One reason rich people avoid poor old friends, there are certain utterances you make in discussions with them base on your wide experience, they’d see it as pride and might directly or indirectly kill you for it, but the rich ones would see it as a mere discussion and see it as topic for deliberations.

Again, Oga build yourself…don’t be Myopic

grin grin No lies detected. I concur to that as a non-rich person.

When they say 'My brother is in Aba', you wouldn't reason it.

But when they replace Aba with Canada, you start feeling somehow.

My brother, you are the problem, not them.

Change your mindset.
U killed it.

Most of those that feel 'somehow' have never travelled abroad before.

You are wrong.

You are the one feeling inferior, and that's why it always hits you like pride.

If you can afford to travel the map, you wouldn't feel this way.

Make money. Travel. Enjoy your life!

It may seem as though you are the one feeling inferior though

You may not leave the shores of Nigeria and be successful, success is relative.

Whether he travels or not, so far he enjoys his life to the fullest… it has no bearing at all where he has been to.

Traveling doesn’t equate to being successful.

When you know someone who have someone abroad footing bills of his or her family at home then you will know why it’s pride. Nigeria is tough and that’s the fact many who have someone abroad who is really supportive should be their pride

What a bad girl! I hear people say that all Nigerian girls are only after money, do you think in line with them?
No!
Coz am a girl and I don't rely on anybody money. We have independent girls out there thou majority of girls depend on guys so I won't be bias here. I think you guys need to eradicate the mindset that all Nigerian girls are after your money. Most but not all smiley

Change your mindset.

I can feel his innate jealousy.

Again his question is baseless. How then do you refer to a family member in a discussion, who's not in Nigeria? Ofcourse, you must mention his place of residence.

Do you care to mind these guys who know nothing? They don't even know a shit about life abroad. Some of them don't even have an international contact from a family member yet they're acting like they know a thing. Thanks to nairaland.

It's part of human nature to want to belong and take pride in those kinds of things. Hispanics, East Europeans, Africans, Indians, etc, do it.

The downsides of telling some people that you have relatives abroad is that you can get them into the danger of being robbed or kidnapped! Be wise and shut your mouth. Period!

Lol! Thank you for your opinion, but that's not the case, I'm talking of the pride that comes with it, and the inferiority complex that is bestowed upon those who don't have families abroad, or those who refuse to mention having families abroad. At least, nobody sees you less for not having a family in Aba, so it's no mindset. I have families abroad, but I never mentioned it, or look less on others who did not. And I never feel proud. I hope you can understand now. Thank you.
How do you know they are proud?
