Very GOOD QUESTION.
Such Threads should be allowed to soar.
The Truth is, such is basically an African thing and most specially a Negro-African thing.

To a Caucasian, Traveling means leisure.
He travels to explore and learn newer ways of doing things and not to create tornadoes.
But most Nigerians leave the country for GREENER PASTURES and not for exploration.
So, leaving Nigeria is now a huge source of employment & forex which will definitely extend to family members.

Caucasians are also excited & boastful of their trips to other parts of the world. In Fact, such serves as an integral part of their RESUME' when applying for Jobs. But not for Greener Pastures and such can never be said of their relatives who rather assume an oblivious perception of their siblings trips.
I had that insinuations until I traveled out and know that it's still d same thing, let me blow ur mind, we are in Abroad because of survival, if our useless politicians achieve what whites did in there country, nobody will want to leave Nigeria, I met some Nigerians that nationalized in Gambia, Ghana and Cotonou, we are here for money the least pay u can get in UK is 10 pounds or 9.6 pounds per hr, multiply it with 12 hrs a day, then calculate it a week or month and know how far, Naija is Scrap.

Its because you can't survive abroad. In here there's respect for everyone and there's no judging and killing people because they abuse prophet Muhammad. An average Northerner cant survive that
Why can't we survive outside?

OP ...e pain U? If I say my brother in UNILAG or my Sister in Abuja or my Aunt in UK..where is the show off or taking pride in it. Did the person lie? That is part of communication.

Nothing special about that. Some people are earning same and more working remotely in Nigeria. I won’t enter plane and go to the UK to be paid minimum wage.

I noticed that most Nigerians feel so much achievement upon having a family member outside the country. I have seen Nigerians proudly declare the following (just an example tough) :

1. My uncle in Canada

2. My Aunty in UK

3. My Brother in the US

Maybe you have not heard that diaspora remittance is the highest foreign earner for Nigeria

4. My son in Germany

5. My cousin in South Africa

6. My husband is in the United Arab Emirates

7. My daughter in Italy

8. My brother in Malaysia

9. My nephew in India

10. My brother sister uncle daughter son in Kuwait
Etc.
I observe a pride in each of these people, and I realized that it doesn't even matter which country the family resides in, for the homers, they always feel like they won a noble prize by having a family abroad.
Some of these people have families in Indonesia, Malaysia, Israel, Libya, Kuwait, Honduras, Greece etc. And they puff with pride as if it's a life worth achievement.
Others have families in the US, UK, Germany, Canada, France, South Africa, Australia etc, which is still note worthy.

But the Question is; why do most Nigerians count having a family abroad as a big achievement, and even make mockery of their fellow Nigerians who do not have a family member abroad. Or those who refuse to mention that they have families abroad?

Is it a Nigerian thing to behave like that, or is it a global thing, do other countries nationals behave like that?

Your opinion is the back bone of this thread. Thank you.

What is this reasoning? Nigeria is grossly underdeveloped and most people take pride in the fact that they have relations abroad as a way of saying "in a way, I have rich family members abroad". It has nothing to do with skin colour, whites or blacks. Travelling abroad for Nigerians is like the highest prayer points answered.

If the Nigerian system was working, it wouldn't matter if your relations were in Mars or Pluto.
My highest prayer point right now is a good job or a laptop. Whichever comes first.

It is a pity such is happening here.
My mum also pressured me to travel out with my family but I no gree.
Whenever am home, she will always be updating me about how Dammy (my childhood friend who traveled to US) sent car home to his mother, he has just bought land and developing it blah blah blah.
Anytime she ask me for money and I say I don’t have or complain before giving her a part of it, the next thing is she doesn’t understand why I don’t want to travel. That am I enjoying the kind of life am living here?
She believes if have traveled like Dammy, she won’t be struggling to get good money from me.
She pressured my wife too, likewise her mum to pursued me.
Whenever I get a financial hit from my business, the next thing I hear from my wife and mother is - what are you still doing here in nigeria? Are we not wasting our time? Is it not better we travel? Blah blah blah
If my wife reads a news that fulani herdsmen attacks a village or kidnap someone, the next thing is she is tired of this country and wants to move to a sane country abroad.
Just any small thing, let’s move as if they don’t shoot sporadically too in abroad.
Also, my mum wants that pride of answering her friends …. Oh Emma is is US doing fine when they ask her about Emma.
I just don’t know the thing with Nigerians and abroad especially women.
No be by force to push person for abroad abeg
This post got to me. Emma if you have a thriving business in Nigeria and you are over 30-35 please please please don't throw it away for the mirage of travelling abroad for 'greener pastures' or 'for the children'. If you do it will be probably the biggest gamble of your like and one you will likely regret. Godspeed.

You are an IGBO man. As for how Igbo see Northerners, We all know that IGBO People are good at looking down on everybody. That's why they are the most hated tribe in the World.

That's why they are hated in South Africa, Ghana, China, Malysia, India and Afghanistan. We in the North don't hate Igbo, cause we pass them in everything.

Do you know that, it is the North that refused to give Biafra their independence? If the North want to allow Igbo go today, we can do that. But we decided to hold them by their Balls. We refused to give them independence, make them do their worst.

The North will also never allow any IGBO man rule this Country. Quote me anywhere about this. Peter Obi just dey waste his time. We no go allow any IGBO Man rule this our beautiful Country and their is nothing any of them can do about it.

You call the North Almajiri, but your leaders are all over the North, showing loyalty to their Almajiri masters and Ass licking every Almajiri Ass they sight grin
You call us Almajiri, but we decide who rule all your Eastern States as Governors, Senators and House of Reps members. Governor Charles Soludo and Governor Hope Uzodinma are the recent amongst the Governor the North install in the EAST against your wishes. grin

Una go wail tire for this Country. grin

Trash.
The North contribute over 40% to the Nigerian Economy. The South South and West contribute too. But tell me, what does the EAST contribute? The East actually contribute ZERO.

This is just a natural thing my guy, stop thinking its a black man thing, being abroad is a different experience, Same way u in-town see villagers as lower class, and town as high class, u can't expect villager not to see you as a higher class and brag about it. If oyinbo lives in space, and has relatives on earth, dnt u think they will brag about it?

OP, you are looking at this topic from a limited perspective. This isn't a Nigerian issue but a developing world/third world issue. People from "poor" countries look up to people from "rich countries". People from the Philippines, Lebanon, Mexico, El salvador, Guatamala and India have people dispersed all over the world. They have more people living in the diaspora than Nigerians. We Nigerians just tend to make the most noise because of our braggado nature. Many families in Nigeria see it as a sense of achievement because of what they expect to get from their relatives. People from the Northern part of the country (i'm talking about Hausa/Fulani muslims) don't travel out that much due to religion and culture. Those two elements makes them content with their environment. Contrast them with their brothers in North Africa (Moroccans, Tunisians and Egyptians) who are all over Europe and the middle east despite their countries being more organized than Nigeria. You will see the difference in exposure.

Nigerians see anything foreign as an achievement. Parents brag of their children studying/graduating from foreign universities, people brag about the foreign schools they went to or the elites showing off the 'exotic' foreign countries they have been to. You may look at it a inferiority complex. They may be true but it's also about the highly competitive nature of Nigerians. We like to show off to our perceived 'rivals'. You need to let people be and let them do what makes them happy. There's enough problems between diasporans and home based Nigerians.
