I think Nigeria has come of age to change some of its laws

We should do better than pegging the minimum requirement for a political post as SSCE.

A degree should be the minimum requirement, and if possible 2:2

Ordinary 70k work wey I do for 2018, dem ask for 2:1

I agree with you, but HND Holders with minimum of Upper Credit should be allowed as well.

Minimum for Senators and Federal Reps should be at least NCE/ND.

Executives at both States and Federal - Degree 2.1/HND Upper Credit

Legislative Arm, both States and Federal - NCE/OND.

Other than degrees, making debates compulsory will go a long way in ensuring sound candidates get elected. You can't be dodging opportunities to speak on the validity of your ideas and expect to be taken serious.

Debates mean nothing. It guarantees nothing. Being eloquent doesn't mean you are smart or intelligent.

Many people are introvert but very brilliant and smart.

Debates can only be effective when a larger population are literate and also have access to the media.

The noise of Obi being on CNN is just for us online and those who have access to media. A large population in Abakaliki, Osogbo or Gusau don't even know he had one, talk more of understanding what he says.

The illiterate and under privileged population is too high to make debate effective

It is not really about coming of age. Most of the developed countries don't even have some of these educational requirements.

For example, the U.S and the U.K don't have educational requirements for President and Prime Minister respectively.

I disagree and I think this is unnecessarily elitist. There are many smart people who did not go beyond Secondary school. I doubt US even has a degree requirement to be president

Someone as smart and successful as Dangote, Cosmas Maduka will you say he isn't qualified to be president?

We place too much premium on University education in Nigeria and to be honest half of the University students in Nigeria have no business going to college but we have this mentality that you University education is a proof of intelligence and the only way to success

There are traders, IT guys and businessmen who didnt get a UNi degree. In many organizations in the US you dont even need a Uni degree. One of my directors na while working he got his long distance Bachelors and was heading an entire unit in a giant organization

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Theflint1(m): 3:18pm On Sep 21, 2022
A culture of debates cannot become a thing unless it's kickstarted. Debates are a bare minimum really. Even SUG elections dem dey do debates not to talk of serious governmental positions like presidency. And debates are not the only variable that will influence decision-making for electorates but we know that having debates will go a long way in ensuring that "good and sincere candidates" get elected. Of course people can do well in debates, smash optics, get elected and fail or do something different from what they promised, but on the average, we get better candidates when they're able to defend and have their ideas questioned.

The U.S does not. The U.K does not. Most developed countries do not.

The problem is the Nigerian factor. It acts as a kind of safeguard against a completely stark illiterate with nothing upstairs becoming President. It can't happen in those countries but it is still possible in a country like ours.

I however agree with you that a minimal educational requirement is no guarantee and pushing the standard up to degree level would be quite elitist and is definitely uncalled for.

Debates are proving to be unnecessary even in the US. In 2015, Donald Trump skipped a Republican party debate to go attend a rally and he still won conveniently

Below are links showing many Republicans are ignoring debates and doing rallies instead. As long as their message get to the people not just an opportunity for grand standing on TV

https://www.usnews.com/news/elections/articles/2022-09-09/candidates-look-to-bypass-debates-amid-turn-from-substance-to-spectacle

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/sep/18/the-end-of-the-debate-republicans-midterms

In Arizona, for example, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Katie Hobbs has declined a debate with Republican Kari Lake, a telegenic Trump supporter who has pushed his “big lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

But Republicans are the main objectors. In Nebraska, gubernatorial candidate Jim Pillen has refused to debate Democrat Carol Blood. Pillen’s campaign manager, Kenny Zoeller, told the Nebraska Examiner that “he doesn’t do political theater”.

Biden says US democracy is under threat. Here’s what he can do to help fix it

In the Pennsylvania’s governor’s race, Republican extremist Doug Mastriano has rejected a televised debate with an independent moderator. Instead he has reserved a hotel ballroom on 22 October and selected a partisan to referee: Mercedes Schlapp, who was strategic communications director in the Trump White House. Democratic rival Josh Shapiro has little incentive to accept.

In North Carolina, Ted Budd, who sat out four Republican primary debates in his Senate race, has said he will not accept an invitation from the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters to debate Democrat Cheri Beasley. Budd said he had accepted a cable debate invitation, but there is no agreement with Beasley about that appearance.
