atmy1:There are not enough troops. That is the long and short of it. It's hard to find accurate numbers but total Ukrainian forces including territorial defenses are more than 700,000. They've had 6 mobilizations since the start of the War. And even if Russia kills 500 per day, it'll take 3 months to kill 90,000. They'll just organize another mobilization and replace them in 2 weeks. Also, the war is concentrated in the South and East. They can just keep pouring troops from the rear, Soviet-style. In contrast, Russia aggregated 120K-180K (depending on who you believe) for the SMO that it rotates. No more than 60-80K at a time. Amongst these are National Guard units. And these are contract soldiers on 6 month contracts. The rest are LDPR militias and Wagner. The Kremlin should have started mobilization after Ukraine backed out of negotiations in May. By now, they would have had at least 500K troops ready to go. The primary argument for the delay is that they needed support from China before escalation, but Putin could have simply shown Xi evidence of Ukraine amassing troops and materiel before the Summer. Ukraine did not hide their plans. They said they'd launch a Summer counteroffensive. Russia has a standing military with 1.9 million personnel. But that's split between the different branches and Russia has 11 time zones. And is second only to the US in overseas engagement. From Syria to Armenia to Mali (with Wagner forces). Putin expected a Georgia redux. Walk in. Smash the military. They capitulate. You leave. It worked for Medvedev in 2008. Because NATO just watched from afar. They barely sent anything. The country has like only 3 million people. In Ukraine though, the script flipped. They've been waiting for 8 years. NATO had been arming them. They had a pre-war population of 44 million. Putin walked in. Smashed the military. They didn't capitulate. And now he's bogged down. NATO did not spectate this time. They've replaced everything lost. Given Ukraine more than they had at the start of the War. And even established bases in Poland, UK, Germany is next and elsewhere to train elite, combat-capable forces. I refuse to believe the General Staff did not game this. There is no first-rate military top brass that wouldn't have. I trust the Nigerian Defense HQ to identify such a possibility, and we're barely a regional power. It's hard to pinpoint one reason to explain why they didn't make hay, but that is quintessential Russia. Do the right thing, only after exhausting all other alternatives. Eventually, Russia will move from an SMO to a full-scale War with millions of combatants. It's inevitable. Or Putin will be deposed. And Shoigu will be lucky if he's not murdered. Russians tolerated Yeltsin's terrible economy, but not the stupefying defeat in the First Chechen War. At the end of the day, he'll have to decide if he likes his neck or not. As no one would listen to any shalaye about why he had 3000+ aircrafts, inherited Soviet capability to turn New York into a parking lot with an indefensible hypersonic missile, and refused to cut electricity in all of Ukraine right on his border. The "Save Civilians" line wouldn't fly. Grozny was flattened and that was inside Russia. And he was the one who did it. You cannot treat Ukrainians who kill Russians better than an unruly Chechen. All of that said, I think from a political POV, his restraint has been masterful. MI6 warned Zelensky that Putin will take out energy installations this month. If he had done that at the start of the SMO, it'll have been called brutal, excessive, and unnecessary. Right now, Russians will simply be asking, "What took you so long?" and "What is next on the menu, as that is not enough." Anything punitive Putin does now, with the odd exception of the use of chemical and nuclear weapons, will not cause as much uproar as it would have earlier in the SMO. Most observers would be like: Finally, this is the Russia we know and dread. -Lord |

olugabbie:Yes. Why won't they? At the start of the Civil War, Ukraine actually pummeled the LDPR forces almost to the Russian border, before fresh inflow of weapons and "unofficial" forces (Wagner PMC and Russian forces wearing LDPR fatigue) helped turn the tide. Which led to the Minsk Agreement. Ukraine started this War with 44m people. 12m people left. Total mobilization pool is 5m at this time. The entire NATO is funneling weapons and money. Russia has 120m. Less than 1m left. Total mobilization pool in excess of 30m. China has not even started testing their microphone. Only Iran is sending loitering drones. China sent 1.4m soldiers to Korea when it looked like North Korea could fall and they'd lose their buffer with US forces. They sent soldiers to Vietnam too when it looked like it could fall and they'd lose their buffer with US forces. Anyone thinking the Russian and Chinese people will let a bunch of Nazi thugs--who claim they want to help the US destabilize Russia and by extension China--run rampant are sniffing sawdust. It is not a coincidence that after the Samarkand summit, Putin hurriedly signed mobilization orders. He will funnel as many Russians to kill as many Ukrainians and take as much territory to cripple Ukraine. And if that fails, China will augment and tap from its 1.3 billion people. If Ukraine really intends to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. It'll happen. -Lord |

| Re: Gov. by Nobody: 7:51am On Oct 03, 2022 |
Sometimes I think Putin's restraint is a political trap to win his allies(China, India, probably Brazil and South Africa) and sow divisions within Europe, which is finally happening. While the real territorial gain in Ukraine has been too slow, Russia's increased influence on the global stage is not in doubt. Look what's happening in Mali and Burkina Faso. Seems Germany is also gradually becoming anti-American which will be a big win. In the end it will be a sweeter victory to isolate America politically. I still think it's wishful thinking and at some point his patience will be exhausted but at least both Russians and other would understand he has tried his best. LordAdam16: |

Enugurangers:Did I hear you say Kherson, a well defended area that is well staffed? Each time Ukraine tried to march on Kherson, they had to retreat with massive loses ... Their counter offensive there massively failed.... |
| Re: Gov. by olugabbie(m): 9:08am On Oct 03, 2022 |
Whobedatte:Firstly, the decision to carry out this kind of attack lies with the president. Secondly, taking out the entire Russian troops in Ukraine is impossible. They can be defeated not destroyed entirely. Lastly, if a single Russian ship is destroyed by NATO or the US, Russia will definitely respond. In concluding, he is bluffing. It is highly likely that Russia will use nuclear weapon if it's forces are defeated in Ukraine. Russia will follow it's Constitution about the use of Nuclear weapon to the later. Although nobody dares respond militarily to this kind of action. But the West will put pressure on China, India & Turkey to cut ties with Russia, which can bring down Russian entire. |
| Re: Gov. by olugabbie(m): 9:37am On Oct 03, 2022 |
Just40:Russia currently don't have enough forces in Ukraine. Their priority for now is Kherson. In fact they withdrew forces from Lugansk, Donestsk and Kharkiv to boost the Kherson defence. The reason is simple. If Kherson falls, Crimea will be next. The Ukrainian troops that took Kharkiv are now mounting pressure on both Lugansk and Donestsk. The Russians are hoping that their troops currently in Donbas will hold the line till winter, probably loosing few ground to the Ukrainians. The 300k troops will not be ready until next year. |
