The Vice Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Akwa, Prof. Charles Esimone, has blamed the recent industrial strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as the sole reason why the institution found itself in 10th position.

Unizik among all Nigerian universities took the tenth position with the recent ranking of the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit, New York, with University of Ibadan, University of Lagos and Covenant University taking the first, second and third positions respectively.

Prof. Esimone said that UNIZIK had what it takes to rank higher if the school could present all the necessary parameters for the global ranking of all universities. He lamented that the recent industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities played an ignoble role in the school's low rating because four basic parameters of the ranking were not completed.

Esimone said, “We did not reach the optimum. We would have been about sixth or seventh because I was doing what is required strategically with the supply of information.

“What we achieved was just a work of faith. The basic parameters, about four of them, were not completed, including data about students distribution.”

“The strike action did not allow the staff to provide the data needed. We thank God all the same. About four parameters we would have put in place to showcase what we have done.”

I have once said it and I will say it again; Agreed that Government(s) may be anti public university education who finds it difficult to pump enough funds into public university education system thereby killing Its quality yet ASUU also helps in the killing through their incessant strike.
