Lesotho, a high-altitude, landlocked kingdom encircled by South Africa, is crisscrossed by a network of rivers and mountain ranges including the 3,482m-high peak of Thabana Ntlenyana


A scenic land of tall mountains and narrow valleys, Lesotho owes a long history of political autonomy to the mountains that surround it and protect it from encroachment. Since the Neolithic Period, the mountain kingdom was the domain of Khoisan-speaking hunter-gatherers. In the 19th century the Sotho, led by Moshoeshoe I, took control of the region. It remained independent until it became a British protectorate, one of three British High Commission Territories (the others being Bechuanaland [now Botswana] and Swaziland).

Lesotho is well known for it's breathtaking scenery which includes snow-capped mountain ranges during the winter. The Sehlabathebe National Park, in the Maloti Mountains, is at the heart of the country and boasts rich plant, animal and bird life. If you're lucky, you'll spot the rare bearded vulture.

Sadly, it's also very poor.

It signed a financially ruinous electricity supply contract to South Africa by charging in the ever depreciating South African Rand rather than the US dollar.

I doubt it has exploited its tourist potential as much as possible as it still remains impoverished. . Many of its unemployed men have for decades been known for travelling to the mines of South Africa for work , even in the dark days of Apartheid.

It does export textiles.
