It happened when the US overthrew their democratic elected leader, install a puppet, and want to quickly integrate Ukraine into NATO. But Putin is not a fool.

He carried a referendum immediately in Crimea and they decided overwhemingly to reunite with Russia. In simple terms, the people of Crimea decided to exercise their democratic right to secede from Ukraine.

Using Crimea as a valid reason to Joining NATO is just a convenient excuse. It's like blaming the reason why you don't want to go for jogging on the weather, that it's raining or too hot. It's just a convenient excuse.

If Russia didn't make this move with Crimea, Ukraine will already be in NATO. Because before any country join NATO, one of the requirement is that the country must not have any territorial disputes.
