Infact it dies in School. Which is why obi used 'was' to describe a relationship that was defined by an overlapping tenure as school mates.

If Obi never met Odili in school, then the seniority is defined by the past. Odili would still be Obi's senior.

Obi would have said Odili IS his senior man, the same way he uses present continuous tense to describe his relationship with Atiku.

Do you describe alumni members as your school mate? Do you describe the principal before you entered school as your principal?
