Trust but verify.

Accounting and finance professionals oversee a company's finances, so they must "trust but verify" every piece of information provided to them.

In other words, they must be willing to accept the potential that the information is correct while still being sceptical of its accuracy.

When accountants receive documentation, they cannot accept it at face value. They must verify its authenticity by cross-checking it with credible sources before acting on it.

In this way, they can avoid any adverse consequences from incorrect information.

The simplest way to do this is to ask questions. Continue to ask questions, even if they appear silly until you comprehensively understand.

Many people will be annoyed by your questions, but unfortunately, it's not part of your job to make people happy.

You will miss many things if you develop a reputation for not asking inquisitive inquiries.

Furthermore, always insist on written or other recorded, verifiable evidence as backup. People would say anything to persuade you to act, then absolutely deny it when something went wrong.

So, it's not that you don't trust them (most of us don't); it’s just that we want to be certain.
