It could, but processes to desalinate it and transport it to the destination will be tedious and expensive.

Israel is currently doing it and will be the 1st nation on earth to achieve such.

Thanks bro, This are the kind of projects APC government likes embarking on.. recharging Lake Chad, Railway from Nigeria to Niger etc.. misplaced priority. They keep borrowing funds and will NEVER focus on improving the lives of the citizens of this great country. Very usèlèèss old order that wants to cripple the already crippled economy more.
And it shocks me to see the youths of today clapping and campaigning for them after going through all what we have gone through.

Amongst the favorites, only Tinubu’s ideas are revolutionary: from agbado (to drive Agro economy) to recruiting 50 million security operatives (to man all ungoverned spaces) to credit rating systems (for citizens to have access to basic amenities through loans) etc. Other front runners are just saying the same things and will likely do trial and error or simply follow the least path of resistance if any of them happens to emerge. Talk is cheap/free. It is either you know what to do or you just do trial and errors.

The major issue with Tinubu is his health. Nigeria does not need a terminally ill president, and may have to settle for any of the other 3 eventually. Time will tell.

The project in itself is not a bad project. Lake Chad region is home to over 30m people and it’s a source of livelihood to Nigerians, Chadians, Nigerians and Cameroonians. It’s also a source of income to the countries hosting the Lake Chad basins. It’s of huge international benefit as it covers 8% of Africa approximately.

There is something called Groundwater Recharge where the lake is supposed to leak to farmlands and soils around the locality.


Natural recharge also can occur as surface-water leakage from rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands to regions of low concentrations.

Well, there is a proposal which involves using nearby rivers to recharge the lake...no need to go to the atlantic.

While it would be good if Tinubu paid for the project with his money... ...seriously, replenishing Lake Chad will cost far more money than even someone like Dangote would have.

Just curious, is it possible to channel all those annual flood from Benue and Kogi into the Lake Chad? I believe the distance will be shorter and use one stone to kill 2 beds.

The uploaded image is from the Lake Chad from 1973 and recently. You can observe that the water has dried up in more than 70% of the entire lake leaving only vast vegetation of dry land without water.

In order to save the lake from drying up completely, you have to recharge. The process of recharging entails refilling up the lake again with water. To achieve that you need to channel water from another source into the Lake. This can be achieved by pumping water from an ocean or diverting a nearby river into the Lake. Either way, it is not an easy or cheap process.

Please note that the Lake Chad is more than the size of the entire South East. We're not talking about a small portion of land.

I hope this gives you a little insight into what recharging the Lake Chad is all about.

The Lake is fresh water and if it to be recharged it would have to be fresh water by damming and diverting the river Niger or another river not by piping salt water from the ocean

Well it would protect the south from desert encroachment but your question is a good one and hopefully there is a fact based debate but not just the Chad, decades ago there was talk about reclaiming the whole Sahara desert, a very ambitious idea

Delatination is very energy intensive. Desalinating water to use is different from desalinating to charge a lake especially one the size of what Lake Chad used to be. That is not viable and that is not what Israel is doing

That Israel is the first is debatable. Libya and others have done similar things but these quite different from charging a Lake the SIZE OF LAKE CHAD

Desalinating to pump into a Lake seems crazy . The more logical approach would be to divert existing RIvers but that means e.g. Diverting water that would go to the Niger Delta to Borno
