When The Associated Press wrote last week that Russia had struck a village in Poland with a missile, fears quickly rose the event would escalate the Ukraine-Russia war into an even bigger conflict.

But it soon appeared that Russia did not fire the missile. And one of the journalists behind the article is now no longer at the news organization.

The reporter, James LaPorta, who had worked at The A.P. since April 2020, had provided information that Russia was to blame from a single U.S. intelligence source. The A.P. used that information in a news alert: “A senior U.S. intelligence official says Russian missiles crossed into NATO member Poland, killing two people.”

The significance of the alleged event was immediately apparent: It could escalate the war.

The information was soon proven wrong. The NATO secretary general and Polish officials said the explosion was most likely caused by a Ukrainian air-defense missile that was fending off a Russian attack and went off course.


The A.P. corrected the article the next day, stating that the erroneous report was “based on information from a senior American intelligence official who spoke on condition of anonymity.”

The correction said: “Subsequent reporting showed that the missiles were Russian-made and most likely fired by Ukraine in defense against a Russian attack.”

In a response to questions about Mr. LaPorta, Lauren Easton, a spokeswoman for The A.P., said in a statement, “When our standards are violated, we must take the steps necessary to protect the integrity of the news report. We do not make these decisions lightly, nor are they based on isolated incidents.”

Mr. LaPorta declined to comment for this article.

In a tweet on Tuesday, Mr. LaPorta thanked “the multitude of journalists, editors and long-time readers that have reached out to me with words of encouragement and kindness. It sincerely means the world.”

Mr. LaPorta covered national security and the U.S. military for The A.P. He previously worked as a reporter for Newsweek, Frontline PBS, United Press International and the Daily Beast. He is a Marine Corps veteran and served in the Afghanistan war. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was a military adviser for the NBC show “This Is Us.”

Propaganda went wrong. This one has been made a scapegoat. It's interesting to see how US propaganda has been failing in Russia. Everyone can see through the ruse. First was the claim that Russia was planning a chemical attack on Ukrainian civilians. These were the same claims NATO used to justify the bombing of Iraq, Syria, and Libya.

They first claim the government is getting desperate and planning a chemical attack. The government denies these claims but the chemical attack happens anyway and the government denies responsibility and even offers the UN to inspect its chemical weapons stock. But NATO (which is responsible for the chemical attacks) refuses the inspection offer, insists the government did it, and use it to justify attacks on government forces.

Russia, knowing all the tricks in NATO's arsenal, realized NATO was planning a chemical attack when they started making noise about an impending Russian chemical attack. Russia raided a chemical lab in Mariupol where the US and Ukraine were preparing chemical weapons to use on Ukrainian civilians and blame Russia. Ukraine and the US denied ownership of the lab, but the noise they were making about Russia planning to use chemical weapons on Ukrainian civilians ended after that.

Now, they wanted to create another false flag operation by claiming Russia fired a missile into Poland but that too has backfired. Ukraine and the US deliberately fired the missile into Poland. Or how in the name of God did a missile trying to shoot down a Russian missile ended up in Ukraine? Poland is to the west of Ukraine and Russia is to the east. Is the so-called air-defense missile not supposed to travel east, toward the direction of the Russian missile? How did it end up traveling west? How did it end up on a random farm and not a bush?

Might be wrong BUT most Missiles are being fired from Ukraine occupied regions i.e Regions in Ukraine captured by Russian Fighters.

The entire Battle is being FOUGHT on Ukraine soil

To best of my knowledge, they weren't those who did investigations.
There are ways to track projectiles, and it's mostly done real-time. Media outlets don't have such opportunity / resources / responsibility

think deeper bro... America doesn't want to get involved "directly" with Russia.

The proxy war is in their best interest... If you have a golden opportunity to destroy your enemy without losing a single soldier or having a single missile land in your territory, wouldn't you hold on to it rather than getting involved directly?

Russia is a vast country... With its population scattered all over the country, which is an advantage in case of a nuclear war. Unlike US. A nuke in NY city or LA won't be funny considering the population concentration in those Areas.

Both Russia and US does not want direct war with each other... They are both smarter than that.

And besides... No news in the world is legit. Everyone reporting in line and in favor of its region's best interest.
