Ukraine did themselves bad in the mid 1990s by handing close to 2000 nuclear war heads to the Russian federation. That nuclear weapons would have been their bargaining chip to nuetralize any threat from any country.

The west is trying to avoid nuclear showdown because it will loose the more. With a combine wealth of over 50 trillion dollars economy vs a trillion plus economy, when the destruction happens the west will suffer the most that's why they are cautious.
