Monsurudeen,by custom d only thing females don't inherit in Igbo land is the man's obi (house in the village) to prevent it from falling into ruins cos it is expected that she will marry and move out so a son is needed to inherit it and maintain it so as to keep the man's name and legacy alive
Apart from that, either the man shares his properties while alive or d children share when he dies but nobody prevents females from getting their shares of their father's properties in Igbo land.
My female cousin who has been married and living in faraway US since 1996 got a duplex in 1st Avenue Gwarimpa,Abuja as her own share of from her father's properties,if nairaland wasn't a small place,I'd have dropped d name of her father here.He was of d 99-2003 senators set.
I don't expect U to believe sha cos most of you base your perception of Igbos on what you see in Nollywood grin

The reality on ground here is that a 73 year old Igbo woman is being evicted by her step son

One thing fundamental to your culture is the capacity to lie remorselessly with no cognitive dissonance.
You lie and believe your own lies in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence

Continue living in denial

By Nduka Orjinmo
BBC News, Abagana
Women are still routinely being cut out of their parents' inheritance in parts of south-eastern Nigeria, despite a Supreme Court ruling that it is discriminatory.

After Onyinye Igwe lost her father two years ago, life became financially difficult for her even though he was a relatively wealthy man, leaving behind houses, land and money in the bank.

Her father, like most men in this conservative country who are superstitious about writing a will, died intestate so the duty of sharing out his estate fell to his children.

Despite being the first child, Ms Igwe, 29, and her five other sisters received nothing - everything went to the three men in the family as is the custom among the Igbo people.

"The men [her brothers] claimed all that our father had.

"They told us [women] that we are going to get married into another person's home so we don't have to inherit anything from our father. Because that's the tradition, we didn't fight with them," she told the BBC.

As a result, she could no longer afford to go to university and now runs a small business selling cooked noodles in Abagana town in south-eastern Anambra state.

Those are olden day practices, some poor, living in the village, uneducated and unexposed ppl still attempt such.
I believe such archaic practices are not only practiced among the poor and uneducated in Igbo land, every tribe/culture has theirs just like some parts of Benue are said to offer their wives for sex as welcome packages to visitors.
It's just like the issue of osu,we we discussing d other day among about 7 of us in our 30s and 40s,none of us had seen anybody called osu or seen ppl referred to as osu.
One of us from Imo State informed us it is only practiced in one particular local govt in Imo State.
Human nature is basically greedy, some poor and uneducated village dwellers might want to use such old customs to shortchange their female siblings hence it is good d supreme court made an official pronouncement on it.
Such things died with the advent of christianity.
Even b4 this supreme court pronouncement, any male sibling who attempted it always landed in court and d property will be shared by probate registry.
I know nothing I say can convince you cos u are a notorious anti Igbo tribalist but its just for general education.

Supreme Court ruling cannot abolish the tradition of Igbos – Igwe Itodo

However, a prominent monarch in Nsukka and the grand patron of Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, and the traditional ruler of Aji autonomous community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Simeon Osisi Itodo, said the Supreme Court ruling cannot abolish the tradition and custom of the IgbosItodo said that any attempt to implement such law in Igboland would provoke chaos and skirmishes among various communities.

He argued that the custom is unique to the people of South-East Nigeria and should not be touched.

“There are traditions which had existed before the law. Before the emergence of law courts, Igbos have their tradition and custom which cannot be wiped out because of Supreme Court ruling.

“There are so many things we have in common which cannot be stopped because of court verdict.

“We are not against that ruling but we would not abolish our customs and traditions which all of us met. You can imagine a married woman coming back to her father to share his property with the sons.

Your tradition before western law came into being was to live in mud and thatched roof houses, walk around barefoot, travel on foot, sleep on mats, cook with firewood and Earth pots, and eat with barehands, etc., have these changed? Senseless customs perpetuated by senseless people.

Be careful not to lure me into fallacy.
I mentioned that it was common. I never meant that it was only applicable to the Igbos.
The issue of egalitarianism and democracy is political in my opinion and should remain as such.

This is wickedness.

She should get a good lawyer.

What will the lawyer do?
The first thing you should understand about the Igbos is who is the first son?
Did her husband leave a will protecting her interest?
If no will exists then who is the first son and other sons come to play.
Until you have the full story and as pathetic as it may sound, you cannot really judge.
I just hope mama has sibblings/ children who can take her in and show her love.

The Igbos have their traditions. The only thing like my late father explained to me years ago that counters this tradition, is that an Igbo man who does not want chaos after his demise, should please write a good will before his death.
Only the will of an Igbo man is what is needed to counter traditions.
Thus , the ball is in the court of men to act reasonably and divide their property themselves before death comes calling.

The supreme court judgement is on daughters. The court never mentioned wives.
Now, even the supreme court itself never mentioned to what extent the daughter inherits.

Let me paint a scenario. If a man dies interstate ie without a will and he has for example ten houses and the late man's sons and uncles give his daughter a car as her inheritance have they not obeyed?
Thus, even the supreme court judgement is so FUNNY.
I repeat again, any Igbo man who does not want chaos in his house when he dies, should please write a will dividing his property as he choses among his children.
