Gun handling and safety is no joke.
If you notice Nigerian police officers while walking by a checkpoint, one of them always have their gun safety on. I done noticed it a couple of times too.

There was a time I was at the national assembly, I was under a shade observing salat and this cop sat like 10 meters away from me. I think he and the other cops were waiting for someone as they are the escort. The cop was seated and had his gun on his laps and it was pointed at me and at general public because he was facing outside, instead of the gun to be pointed at the ground.
He was holding the fn f2000 and that's DSS gun but he was wearing police green khaki.
When people in authority aren't trained to use and handle weapons well, stuffs like this happen.
